Copy core designs and modify them?

In the ship design screen, is it possible to take a core design, and modify/tweak it? Or do you always have to start out with a blank slate and design a ship entirely from scratch?

I'm thinking of Mechwarrior here; you could always go into the Mech Lab, grab any existing Mech, even the default ones, and use them as a basis for a new design. I'd love to be able to do that here.

You can not modify a Core design. It even states that in the manual. One reason is the Core designs, when they first become available to you, are typically more powerful than what you can make yourself.

You can upgrade designs you make yourself.

I would like the option to take the appearance of a Core design and update it. I understand I may have to place all components, but it would be nice to start out with the Core visual model.

I know that the Core designs are supposed to give an idea of where to go with building your ships but I never use Core ships if I don't have to. They're too slow and their ranges stink. And they aren't affected by miniaturization so they're quickly outmoded.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have never had a core design be even comparable to a custom one. In fact, I don't think I have made a core ship since my first game. They are just too specific to be useful.
