How to research different weapon and defense types?

I am playing the first scenario of the campaign as the humans. I have advanced beyond the first techs, but as much as i look, I do not see how to research missiles, mass drivers, shields or point defense. The only thing I seem to be able to research are additional beam techs and armor techs. Is this normal/intended? And if not, what do I have to do to research the tech areas mentionned above?

The campaign is as much about introducing you to the game as it is about the story. A lot of stuff is removed at first so you're not totally overwhelmed.

Play a normal sandbox game and you'll find everything there ready to be developed!

Yep, the tech tree is limited in the campaign, and patrially pre-researched in later missions as well (where it opens up a bit more).
