Question regarding starting tech and the research tree

Here is my example:
The Yor begin with the Ion Drive. In order to research more advanced tech, do I have to research the techs between the hyper drive and ion drive to go to the next one or can I use the ion drive level of tech and just go forward from there?

If you manage to "skip" one or more techs, you never need to go back for them (unless something else branches off those exact techs, like Telepathic Defense off Point Defense).

The AI actually calls you on this when you try to get a trade advantage by giving it (say) Laser I, Laser II, AND Laser III.
