Thanks Dev, I have a habit of missing the few first builds of programs as it is, Hate Bugz!, LoL , I think I will wait, at least until my current version of MS Antispy needs to be updated in july, by then I will probably have no other choice but to go with "Windows Defender" if I choose to continue running MS's Antispy software...

I actually uninstalled this. One thing I liked about the previous version was I could have it installed, run a scan with it, then completely shut it down. This new version however, is much more recalcitrant. Even setting it to not run all the time, to not run on startup, and removing the startup entry, it still loads something at startup and keeps it there. If you open it, scan and then close it it leaves at least 2, if not 3 processes running that have to be killed from Task Manager. I didn't look to see if it also has an associated service with it.

Seriously, if I can't control a program, I won't run it. I think it sucks that it leaves processes loaded and running even after you close the program. And forcing me to have something run on startup is just crap. I surf safely, and have never had spyware problems. Not too worried about not adding this to my already considerable line of security.

Yes there is a service associated with Windows Defender but if you set it to manual and then try and start Windows Defender it falls down in a heap.

Also, does anybody else have the issue in that Windows Defender is not skinned? It looks like something from windows 3.1 on my system, very old look and feel.

Good to know, and not surprising. Shame too, as I think these are huge steps back from the previous beta. I happily used that since release.

What are you referring to when you say "service"?

Open the Run dialog and type services.msc

You will see a long, extensive list of services, processes that run on your computer. Some you need, most you don't, and they all use system resources. I hate programs that don't give me control over what runs.

services.msc

OK-- now I know hat you mean. I thought you were talking about some kind of web service-- like whatever that new MS whatever-center service is.

WFX beta doesnt work with it.

What happens? Do you mean Windows Defender (WD) has to be added to the Fx Excluded list? Or does Fx do something strange if WD is running?

works fine for me. I agree with the above comments about WD though. One hopes it will improve with time.

I apologize. WFX has been hiding the WD window. Excluding it seems to work ok. OTOH, WD seems schiozphrenic about it's updates. The systray icon keeps wanting to install the same update forever.
