Developing resources

In Icarium's thread on runaway alien bonuses, eradicus wrote:

I guess as a newbie I'm unclear what this means, and it hasn't been clear to me what's happening as (for example) I pump up the mining on a Morale, Research, or Influence resource. Can someone enlighten me? -- HtL

Nothing to be confused about, the statement you quote is (partly) wrong.

Military resources simply give the stated bonus on your mining starbase (starts at 5% and goes up as you add modules) as a direct boost to your ships' attack and defense ratings. For example, if you have a newly claimed military resource at 5%, an anti-matter missile will be boosted from its base attack of 100 to 105.

The other resources have much more complicated ways of being applied to your empire, such as boosting your planet's capacities (either base or bonus) depending on what you have built there so far. So just think "more is better" (as long as you can afford the maintenance costs!) when building planetary improvements and you'll be ok.
