I assume most ships would have at least two weapons or abilities. For example when I suggested the Gravitic Mine above I was thinking of it as the secondary system of a ship that had another "primary" weapon. But this is Star Control, so I could see a ship with only one weapon. A single weapon ship would probably be very fast and agile with a relatively weak weapon, or the opposite direction and be very slow and tough with a single powerful weapon. But I imagine that m

A weapon that would be very cool for one of the ships to have is what I call a "Gravitic Mine". It would be a very fun weapon in a top-down space combat game. A Gravitic Mine only does a small amount of damage when it detonates, but creates a weak short-lived singularity. This creates a brief (2 or 3 second) gravity well that both slows and slightly alters the course of the target. It is an excellent weapon for deterring and escaping pursuit. A very fun ship co

I read somewhere that the super-melee map is a solar system. I understand what they mean by that, it means the map will be large with "terrain" like planets that create gravity wells, asteroid fields that limit maneuverablity, and dust clouds that might have various effects. This would mean that SC2 would actually use an open map. In that case, the devs should be aware of the concept of the retrograde when designing the ships. Faster ships that are able to fire backwar

Much like the top 5 thread I started, it might help the devs to know what other games SC2 fans like so... what games have you been playing for the last month? Lately I have been playing... Path of Exile World of Warships Blood Bowl 2 And recently I have also played... Stardrive 2 Elite Dangerous Shogun 2 Faster Than Light I like all of these games except for Elite Dangerous, I probabl

Back when I was working as a designer, in 1999, one of the programmers came into the break room one morning and mentioned that PC Gamer was going to have a list of the Top 100 games of the century in their next issue. My immediate reaction was "I bet Star Control II doesn't even make the list, and I would put it at #1". I was the only person in the office who had ever heard of Star Control II and spent the next week hearing comments about how I thought some "obscure game only

Ohh... I played Master of Magic way back when, that was a really great game. Most people don't know this, but Master of Orion is an unlicensed Star Fleet Universe computer game. It is the combination of Steve Cole's Star Fleet Universe (Star Fleet Battles and Federation & Empire) into a single game, within the framework of a Civilization like game. It's a long story how that happened, but Master of Orion is essentially a Star Fleet Universe g

I am bored at work and felt like making a list:-) It might be useful to the devs to know what games other than SC2 the SC2 fans like, so it isn't entirely a fluff thread. Mine are... Computer games 1. Star Control 2 2. Civilization 3. Sierra's Front Page Sports Football 4. X-Com 5. Team Fortress Board Games 1. Star Fleet Battles 2. Mega Supremacy 3. Avalon Hill's Acquire<

I would very much hope for gamepad support. Top down space combat is best controlled with a gamepad, in my opinion, but the keyboard does give you a different type of control that some players prefer... at least that was how it worked in Subspace. Among the best Subspace players, most used a gamepad. But a few used the keyboard. There actually moves you can do with a gamepad you can't do with a keyboard, and moves you can do with the keyboard that you can't do

I always liked the idea of the Pakleds in Star Trek, and something like them would fit well into SC with the comedy aspect of a race of retarded people operating space ships... but I'm guessing something like the Pakleds are too politically incorrect for 2015:-( "We look for things. Things that make us go." Would have been just fine 10 years ago.

A critical aspect of this game will be map size and type. There are two types of maps for top down space combat, closed and open. An open map is endless, like space. A closed map has a barrier, or wall, and is limited in size. There are many problems with using an open map, the most obvious of which is an endless ability to run away. Star Control will almost certainly use closed maps. Using a closed map, map size becomes a critical component to both t

Star Control should definitely remain a top down space combat game. This is the great forgotten action genre of computer gaming that needs to be brought back. The Star Fleet Battles board game is the original top down space combat game, top down space combat in slow motion under a microscope, and there is over 30 years of tactical knowledge from that game that completely dissects how top down space combat works. Done right, top down space combat can be many times better than

I played all 3 Star Controls when they first came out. I am 47 years old and have played computer games since their earliest days and I have always considered Star Control II to be the absolute best computer game ever made. But then, I am a sucker for top-down space combat games. Before computer games existed I had already been a board game junkie and was a member of the Star Fleet Battles staff in a previous century, so top-down space combat is my favorite type of game. &nb

Yes, I just got an questionnaire to apply, I am not in yet. I hope to be, and never thought I would want to do something like this again. But for Star Control... I would really enjoy offering my opinions to the developers for Star Control and it will be like re-living my younger years as I used to do that a lot. In fact, long ago I was a member of the SFB staff which was kind of the first ever organized effort of gamers assisting a designer with his game. I did that wh

I don't know why it came too me, but I got an E-Mail about the Star Control Founders Program and that was the first I'd heard of a new Star Control. Star Control II is my best memory in my entire gaming life. I had played SC1, and got SC2 the first weekend it came out. It was the only game I have ever played, and I have played many, that I literally could not stop playing until I finished it. I played SC2 that entire weekend, I think it was 42 hours straight, u
