I agree in general with this... In fact, it would only make sense that flipping a planet like that would grant a slow learning of colonization of such a planet. This would either aid current research into the specific type of planet, or move on its own as your scientists learn from the inhabitants exactly how to manage things...

Here's a thought: After fleet battles, there's a chance of the site of the battle having a new anomaly. Basically, you can initiate salvage operations with a survey modules, and get some of that cash back. Not nearly the values of the ships destroyed, certainly, but enough to make survey enabled ships an important addition to a war machine. hehe Imagine being able to salvage the field of battle after a victory and being able to effectively stea
Rolling back the driver may help, though at this point I believe that will only mask the real issue... You should be able to turn the card all the way up with no issues.
Counterintel, I've not delved to too difficult a play level as yet, but I've found the best way to keep them at bay is to gift them techs... Speak to them often and if they seem grumpy, gift them BC or techs. I do this even with the Drengi and Drath, with nations warring... The only tech I never roll over are influence/economy techs. I'll research the quickie things after I've gotten up to historical assimilation, just to have junk techs to throw at them all to keep them happy
Yes... They help increase the influence of your nearby planets and counteract attempts at cultural unrest/insurrection against you by the AI. I always float one between Earth and Mars as a Terran player...always... helps in the harder games where some AI's like to dive right in and flip your planets. I've read that some people destroy their influence bases once they flip an AI planet. Not me...I keep those bases floating, build a couple cultural improvements on the planet(s), then, some
Perhaps upgrading to the latest version may clear up inconsistencies you're seeing? It only takes a few minutes and you really lose nothing... There's no real reason not to upgrade your gold install. I upgraded mine the moment I registered and haven't had a lick of trouble. Grab the new height maps while you're at it. (If'n I'm not mistaken, the 1.7 beta is where you get the gigantic maps, too...)
I've noticed that, too. Last night, I had a game where I was running +2500bc economy. The minute I was driven to get into a war with 3 civs at once, I went almost immediately to -550bc once the fighting started. I had to temporarily slide the overall production slider to 0 just to boost my income into the green again as I'd run out of cash to build ships... I ran around with my 4 solid fleets and destroyed as many of the AI civs' resource bases as possible and sent already constructed c
Cultural victories seem to be my own personal best way to win a game, as in I have the most success, personally, doing it that way. At least, so far... If you play nice with all the civs, you can sometimes win a game without ever building a single warship. I've even had civs paying me tribute while I'm busy flipping their planets.
You may want to also try lowering your graphics settings, as well as your hardware accelleration... Though, for either one, you shouldn't have to. I'm running a 7800GS and am having no problems with the latest drivers under XP. I'd venture a guess that it may, indeed, be the card if the latest drivers are still not resolving your issue.
I like to research to warp drives (at least), then create an advanced constructor...one that can fly long distances in a single turn. Then I have 3 planets build up a lot of them, all while playing nice-nice with all the races. I then pick the weakest target (one with the fewest planets) and launch all of the constructors at once at them. By this time, through trades and research, I've gathered enough tech to build VERY formidable bases, as well as researched strait into cultural conquest. <
We already have that...sci-fi shows thrive on the west coast...California, especially. I don't think it's so much that Hollywood's here... It's more like sci-fi seems to go hand-in-hand with overdevelopment of technology. Sci-Fi is largest in two prime locations; thriving and proliferating... Japan and California. I mean, Hell, even George Lucas calls the SF Bay Area home. hehe
That's why you blockade before you wipe out another race... Don't let your allies get ships through.
I'm sorta with Jythier... While mad and massive props (sometimes I hate the "younger crowd" lingo, but "when in Rome"...) and much respect go to you for such a great and fairly detailed guide on how to beat the game on Suicidal, I'm personally just happy to win a game at Beginner on a Tiny map with a cultural victory. lol I'll likely never be in the Top 1000 , but I give due consideration and salutes to those who can micromanage so much in order to defeat them game by usi
I think what Cam's trying to say is "if you're kickin' butt with the way you're doing it, then it's working for you...why try to do it like others?" I could be wrong, but...
I've done that a couple times...make one really nice warship and given it a survey module to run around and grab anomalies. However, on the main topic, it would be interesting to allow Research starbases that were unique in that they could, for a race, form a non influence generating science "platform". Set a limit...say...2 per "body type" of station (i.e.; gas giant, micro world, nebula, etc.). I don't think the tech should be too hard to reach. Edited in: In fact, what about k
I remember starbase repair modules being in Galciv1, however they only speed up the rate of repair of ships in range of the starbase. I do not believe starbases need repair themselves, because that would indicate that their defences are somehow relevant! Ouch... lol With the way my games usually go, I end up with a LOT of defense systems (and some decent attack systems) on all my bases... Can't take over the galaxy with influence witho
I completely agree with the OP. Now, I'm new to the game, so I've not had a real chance yet to explore all the possibilities, but I find that I can seem to win fairly quickly and fairly bloodlessly unless I get both the Drengin and the Drath on the same map (I always play on Small or Tiny map with EVERYTHING else set to "Random"...I like the truly random games instead of the ones that can be worked by rote) if I go for the Diplomatic/Influence win. I've not yet gotten the hang of buildi
