I'm not big on multi-player either. I don't think I would have in interest in playing a game like GC2 online, but there have been games where I've enjoyed it. Most multi-player games are really best suited for LAN parties with your freinds. Too often, playing online with the public results in a bad experience.

I don't pay a lot of attention to things that involve role playing or backstory. I'm more into the strategic aspect of games. In fact, I'm thinking about buying Mass Effect 2 which would be the first time I've had an interest in a game that advertises role playing as one of its features. Just not something I've been big on in the past. The point being, if GC3 is going to do anything that makes sense because of backstory, it would be w
Graig raises a good point. Perhaps I should go straight to TA?
Been playing this game off and on since Dread Lords was released. Took me a while to get a handle on the unique tech trees in TA. You won't waste your time playing through the expansions. There's lots of strategies to explore as you play each one. But, do get Twilight eventually, it's got some great features over DA. Also,
I have never seen an extreme planet slider in DA.
Oops, my bad. Extreme planet density is a TA feature. It's been a while since I played DA as well.

That's a good point, I mean paying to turn good really isn't something that makes a lot of sense. It should be based on your behavior in the game as you stated. Maybe we'll see a revamp of the ethical alignment system in GC3 that makes more sense.

-Planets Well, yea, something needs to change there. Planets are probably my biggest source of contention in the game. There's way too much clicking and repetition involved in planet building. It's not a problem when you're playing with a small number of habitables, but the game is way more interesting when the numbers are high. Personally, I'd like to see the whole planet interface scrapped for something that has a more set it and forg

It's a very old and tired topic. GC3 *might* have multiplayer only because the devs probably got sick and tired of hearing about it. They'll probably stick it in there in some form just to avoid the never ending grief they got about it in GC2.

Been a while since I played Dread Lords, but there's little difference in the need for an initial colony rush. However, the economy is tighter in DA. Engines are more expensive and speeds are lower as well. Colony modules only hold 250 instead of 500 colonists. It will take some adjustment, but it's still the same idea. You'll still want to get out as many colonizers as you can as soon as you can. There is a trick in getting around

I play with the minors disabled. I finally got bored with them. I haven't tried so I don't know if it would work, but it might be possible to edit the RaceConfig.xml file to give the minors a major race type. That might make them behave like a major race. In TA, they get a variant of the Terran tech tree, so they wouldn't be limited in that regard.

I consider the difference between reality and the way the game works just creative license. There's a lot of stuff that just wouldn't work if the game tried to adhere to some kind of realistic parallel. That said, the game favors evil in most respects. I always take the evil choice in ethical decisions. When it comes time to choose an alignment, the fee for Neutral is pretty minor really. The fee to select "good" can be substantial, but I haven't p

If you're having trouble with one race dominating or another floundering, you can adjust race intelligence individually. Set your difficulty level then take the Terrans down a peg or two to balance them. There's also other race characteristics you can adjust under Personality. It depends on the game, but in Dark Avatar I usually played Yor or Thalan. In Twilight (TA), I tend to play custom race with super breeder or super hive using the Terran tree. However, in

I feel strongly about the China situation, so many reasons why we shouldn't buy products made there, but American companies have no second thoughts about exploiting their labor force. I believe it to be a major flaw in our free enterprise system and I believe it has hurt America in many ways. There's not much we can do other than protesting with our wallets. Maybe it can make a difference.

It may be a major flaw, but it's a wheel that doesn't squeak. Since most people use the ship designer exclusively once they've got a handle on it, the developers have never payed much attention to issues with the core ships.

There's also the 20k bc corruption and graft penalty. Income drops radically when the bank balance goes above that. The resource sliders in Domestic Stats can be a real source of confusion. Understanding those is key to playing the game well. There have been a lot of posts about people disliking the way they work, claiming them to be confusing and illogical. They do make sense once you've played a few games so give yourse

Defenses are effective as well. Opponents generally specialize in one line of weapons tech. Look at your enemy's ships to see what weapons they are carrying. Build ships with defenses against those weapons. For example, if you see enemy ships with guns (red), defend with armor (also red). If you see ships with beam weapons (blue), defend with shields (also blue). Ship battle has an element of randomness. The "luck" ability will imp

You probably need to be more specific. What are you having trouble with exactly. There are lots of areas that can cause problems when you're not familiar with the game. Can't really comment on all of them in a quick reply. There's a GalCiv wiki that can help; https://www.galciv.wikia.com/ You can also do a forum search on strategy. There's lots of posts that discuss that stuff, but it might n

I think its certainly within the realm of possiblity to see a whole new game, and yea, maybe they don't even have to call it Galactic Civilizations. Though I don't know about the no war idea, that might be kind of a reach. I'd like to see somthing all new, but even if its a continuation of the current theme, I bet I'd still like it plenty.

That Mercenary Academy is pretty cool, use your strong diplomatic ability to put all the races at odds with eachother to pick up a couple thousand bc every turn. I don't think the Mercenary Academy is overpowered. If you compare it to the benefit of super breeder, for instance, it's really not an overly huge advantage. Another fairly big advantage comes to mind. Some races like the Korx and Thalan (I believe), have tech tech tree access to the discount,
Pobably they did to prevent confusion and loose "power" upon game's updates.
I don't think it was intentional. The ability to upload mods to the library was inadvertantly broken by the last major galciv2.com web site update. I think they're putting all their web efforts into other sites like impulsedriven.com. Impulse quickly jumped into the arena to compete with other digital distribution clients. I'm sure there's been a ton

One of the very first things I research is Sensors I. That's all you need to enable the survey module. One you have that, you can stick one on any hull you have available at the time. Anomolies can be a huge help when in the early game so I try to get a few ships out on auto-survey right away. They're usually a cargo hull with a couple engines, a survey module, and several basic life support modules.

When you say vanilla, I assume you are referring to Dread Lords. Dread Lords is the original game. Dark Avatar was the first expansion and Twilight of the Arnor was the second and final expansion. Each game version has been patched significantly from the original release so there are some big differences there as well. If you happen to be playing a CD release, I would strongly recommend you update with Impulse. TA has mem

A lot of stuff is configurable, but some things rely coding in the game exe. Those are the things that require a "patch" to correct. Otherwise, it's pretty simple to change things yourself. Most of the stuff in the game is specified in xml files which are just plain text for the most part. Unfortunately, the ability to post things to the mod library on the GC2 site has been down for some time. It doesn't look like it's going to be fixed either. It

Yea, there's a ton of new stuff in TA. I think it's a much better game, but DA still has a few things on it. Some people don't like TA and only play DA. I'm not one of them. One wierd thing about the starbase repair module, it's there in the .xml files and appears in the tech tree, but it doesn't show up in the module list even if you mod it into the game with no requires. Looks like it was supposed to work, but doesn't because they never got aro

You can use default, it's what I use for "casual" mods. Just make sure the path is correct and mods are enabled from the main options menu. You can also check the entry in prefs.ini. One thing though, there's a mods folder for each version of the game, for example, if you want to change something for Twilight, you need to put files under the Twilight mods folder. In the mods section of the main game option menu, if you select Change
