Stardock/Object Desktop Complaints

I purchased Object Desktop about two weeks ago; I have not yet used any part of it with the confidence that no problems will arise. In fact after terrible windows performance (crashes, freezes, broken icons, broken programs eg. some no longer open at all) I have reformatted my system more than three times already, just to ensure I was rid of anything connected with the software.

My system is a beast, if I do say so myself, WinXPHome fully up to date from msupdate along with WMP11 (beta) and IE7 (rc1) and I'm a member of many of the Windows Live beta programs (mail, favourites, toolbar etc.) and while I realise these could cause possible conflicts I have no problem running the most demanding of programs and Windows has always performed perfectly, until I started using Stardock products... (Granted 9x crashed a lot in its day but XP has never broke on me unless I was screwing with something)

The last time I reformatted I made sure to give it a few days of normal everyday use. I have had zero problems at all, I have not once had to open task manager and end some process that fucked up. So I again installed Stardock Central and got my Object Desktop, almost immediately I have programs freezing on me. I was going to include screenshots with this very report, but for some reason mspaint won't even open now!? (All my other image programs take too long to start up every time I want to paste a screenie) It seems to start up because it's right there in the task manager but I can't see anything.

I am going to list everything that I have run into that seems not to work as it should. You guys can do what you want with this info; I have given up faith in any Stardock products. I will not recommend Stardock to anyone I know and will probably discourage anyone that asks me about your gear. I had it in mind to buy Galactic Civilisations II because it looked good on reviews, but after these last couple of weeks everything Stardock related is banned from my system. I'll keep an eye on the progress of Object Desktop over the next year but I think you can kiss any renewal of my account goodbye. I can't just look at a nice UI it *must* function well too.

=================

Component Tray:

Seems like a good thing, saves about a second more than going to the Start Menu at the other side of the screen. Maybe it's of more use when there are themes that remove the Start Menu applied. Only problem was every time I hovered over the start-up option in the rightclick menu everything freezes, the first time I tried saw it said something about Stardock in there but I don't even know what that part of menu is even for because it crashes every time I move the cursor over it.

Enhanced File Dialog:

Pretty good features but it would have been a whole lot better if it remembered my settings more often. In the open/save dialogs I kept changing the view to List because in many folders I have tons of files that take too long to scroll through when the default Detail view with lines keeps reasserting itself. Also in some dialogs there is a New Folder button in other dialogs it's not there. There was not an option to show a New Folder button so I couldn't change it to always show. I discovered how much I miss that button when it's gone.

Object Edit:

After I installed all associated icons (.ini .txt etc) are now the ugly default unknownfiletype icons. Nothing I tried helped to correct this, and none of the rebuild/repair options worked including the one in TweakUI (which has been working fine for me since the Win9x version). Eventually I had to manually fix the icons and associations myself. There are tons of text files on any given system I can't believe no one else has not had or noticed this problem since the whole idea of Object Desktop is to make shit look pretty.
In the update history I noticed this line under the new rc : ' (*) Fixed Install / Uninstall to properly remove associations ( Registry Cleaners may prevent uninstall ) '
Perhaps this addresses my problem here? I am using only the current release programs from Object Desktop.

IconPackager etc:

For starters why do I keep needing to reassociate icon files with the various icon programs in Object Desktop? Surely these programs don't conflict with each other? They should work together! Constantly changing associations between IconDeveloper to IconPackager to IconX when I open each is probably a great way to fuck things up. If the separate programs don't conflict I can't imagine what else besides Windows itself is taking back associations because I don't have any other kind of icon manipulation software besides Object Desktop.

Icons are one of the most visible things that change when using themes; it really sucks when this kind of software breaks things. I usually restore to windows default settings before applying a new theme just to make sure that I can see what all the changes are, unfortunately the options don't seem to work properly in any of the Object Desktop utilities. If I for any reason wanted to remove Object Desktop I am left with a nasty mess of a UI to clean up.

Missing Url History Icon: The ' Restore Windows Default ' option in IconPackager points to C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocvw.dll,36 this icon doesn't exist on my system, the proper place is C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieframe.dll,36 (or ieframe.dll,32 maybe) Possibly the IconPackager doesn't know where to look because of IE7 changing things up (or is my computer just so different than everyone else’s?)

Missing Hotmail Icon: On the Start Menu you can change default Email provider, while Outlook Express is chosen the icon is good, but since I use Hotmail, that's what I chose as default. The ' Restore Windows Default ' option in IconPackager points to C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\hmmapi.dll",0. I'm no techie but that looks like it should work, that's where the icon is on my system. However is there suppose to be a space between Program and Files like the actual folder name? How come I can't edit and save the Windows Default icon set to fix it? (Yeah it asks if I want to save changes before exit or I can use the menu option but neither actually save) If the Windows Defaults is not a set but just info built from the way my computer was already set up, how comes it normally has its correct icon?

Missing Microsoft Outlook Icon: The ' Restore Windows Default ' option in IconPackager points to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\outlook.exe,7. On my system there is no outlook.exe in that folder, as far as I can tell it should point to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe,1. Even if the IconPackager pointed to the folder the icon would be the wrong number. I'm using Microsoft Office 2000 Pro, with all files run from hard disk because I have plenty of gigs to spare and inserting discs when asked pisses me off.

Is IconPackager compatible with msupdates? In one recent msupdate, I seem to have received a new shdocvw.dll; this contains different icons that the one I had when I looked the week before. Do the ' Restore to Windows Default ' options actually work interactively? As in finding the defaults as and where they are on the system when IconPackager is installed and not just where the program thinks they should be...

Wrong Drive Icons: My computer came with a Compact Flash, a MS\SD and a SM/xD card reader. All of which had there own special icons. Of course I lose all of them if I apply an icon set or restore to windows defaults.

If the IconPackager actually looked to see what was default and then made an icon set named Windows Default (or My Current Theme or something) which I could apply I wouldn't have had any of the above problems.

Recycle Bin: I had applied the CopperDeck2 theme when I first tried Object Desktop. The Recycle Bin refused all attempts to change it back to default or any other icon after it had become the CopperDeckII icon, rebuilds/repairs, TweakUI, Display Properties - nothing but a reformat fixed it.

Object Zip:

This is not a problem but it's pretty damn annoying. Why doesn't the context menu have an option to extract straight to a new folder where you currently are? Winrar has the option and its way better than having a context menu option that can end up filling the screen. For example imagine how wide the menu gets if I want to work with this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\Necaradan666\My Documents\Necaradan666\Porno\Alternative Porn\Zombie Pr0n\October 2004\thenightofRISINGdead.jpg

disclaimer: I don't actually have those folders on my system

But I do have enough archives, which I use regularly, in just such locations. Just one click from the start menu but the actual file path is loooong. Before buying Object Desktop I used a shareware version of Winrar and it sucks that one I just paid for is not as good. Also; even though I chose to associate all types of archive with Object Zip, when working with .zip files it's Windows that does the extracting although the .zip's use the Object Zip icon. Winrar was totally overtaken by Object Zip and .rar's extract fine. Why the difference? I notice in Stardock Central that Object Zip is one of the oldest of the programs available to Object Desktop users (18/03/2004) perhaps it's time for an update.

Theme Manager:

The 'Restore to Windows Defaults’ doesn’t work like it should. When I first installed Theme Manager I had a non-Luna desktop wallpaper and when I chose to restore this is what I got back each time I applied, even after uninstalling and then reinstalling Object Desktop while I had Luna applied. I had also deleted the Stardock folder and the other wallpaper and the copy of it that Webshots made in the Documents and Settings. How did it keep coming back? It was really fucking annoying. When I select Windows Default that's what I should see, not some other shit I had there before. If there was an option for ' Windows Default ' and ' Your Previous Settings ' it might have been better. Also many icons didn't change (even when the rebuild/repair options are used) until I applied another theme. Many themes just wouldn't work only Basic Aquarium, CopperDeckII, MacPC and Terminator 3 downloaded and applied without crashing Theme Manager and sometimes freezing the whole system. That's only 50% success, not good enough.

On a somewhat unrelated note, the WMP skin from Terminator3 is one of the coolest looking skins I've used for WMP, but what is this huge white box around the outside of it? I can drag the player around the desktop by this white box too, so even if it was transparent it could get in the way of doing things. I am using the new WMP11beta but all my other skins from WMP9series+ work exactly the same as always. Does anyone else see this white box? If so whoever said it should be called ' official ' needs to work out what quality means.

SpringFolders:

Too slow even when the slider has been moved all the way up. By the time the folder opens I could be doing other shit.

Tab Launchpad:

I set this program to show a systray icon when it told me that I'd have no way to reveal it if Auto Hide was turned on. Too bad it still disappeared! Along with the systray icon! I had to go to task manager to close it down.

And what's with some of the shortcuts that install into the Start menu not having any icons? Jeez the package includes the damn IconDeveloper surely few more icons wouldn't have been too much trouble. They are only little extra programs but it’s all about style and being professional ya know? It makes me frown when things install to the Start menu and looks like they should belong in the system32 folder or something instead.

OMFG!!! Even as I am writing this text file (in Object Edit on the Desktop) I am experiencing catastrophic program failures! I just tried to make this post and found Internet Explorer won’t connect/load up properly even though Windows Live Messenger does so and signs me in instantly. I thought it might be conflicts with Stardock Central trying to be the default browser but it’s not and I can’t seem to fix the problem. Something has also destroyed my Desktop I can no longer right click or see any icons; even this text file disappeared! I have spent around five hours writing this and testing the programs again to make sure I don’t make false accusations and I thought it was gone!

Thank all the Gods for System Restore! This last time I reformatted I made sure to manually create a restore point before installing Stardock Central and downloading the Object Desktop files. I have to go to work today and didn’t have time for another reformat. Luckily I was able to uninstall all the Object Desktop components (with a large amount of errors for some reason) but after deleting all trace of Stardock and restoring the system I am back to normal. This system restore fiasco has concreted my hatred for all things Stardock related. I should have just flushed my $50 down the shitter!

ARRRRGH!

Just a quick reply to one bit of all this...that T3 skin IS an official release...for WMP9, not WMP11beta.  They are two quite different programs.  You will be [almost] guaranteed to have issues with skins for 11 that were NOT designed for 11...

Please post your exact system specifications. Processer, vid card, ram, etc.

Yeah it's not an issue that the Terminator skin is not working correctly on the wrong version of WMP, especially compared to the other stuff.

My computer is a Medion that I got from the local Aldi store, It's a P4 dual 3.2Ghz with a gig of ram and a Medion(ATI)Radeon X740XL video card plus a secondary one the same. Want any more like a dxdiag or something?

In not a tech wizard or even a hardcore gamer but this seems pretty good to me. I have been able to handle every game I have tried even if I can't have full settings (but I usually can)

Im fully equipped with virus and ad/spyware protection. One thing I forgot to write earlier... When I was testing the Desktop Gadgets they seemed to work fine until I opened the MP3 player then Windows freaked and Data Execution Prevention shut everything down. It must have been something nasty because I've never even seen DEP crank up before

First thing to verify is the age/version of your graphic drivers....
Like I said fully updated, I can get no better without buying a newer card
Reply #6 Top
Are you running Norton?

First Google hit on the Aldi Medion I got said something about it being no good because it wouldn't run 'genuine nVidia drivers'....

It's not so much about whetether they are 'up to date' as to 'what they are'.

Mine for example are the originals packaged with my card...so are getting on for 2 years old...

Jafo... I too agree that it is not so much whether they are up to date or not. In fact, I have noticed MANY of the nVidia drivers to be more buggy for my specific computer over the past year or so. So, I've stayed with my original drivers as provided by HP (after all, they are still listed online as the ones to use... which Medion typically indicates as well).

Necaradan... What programs do you specifically have loading up at the start of Windows? I have a feeling that you have got a boat load of stuff loading that is quickly making a hit on the performance of Stardock products. If not, I would say that your "up-to-date" drivers are causing your issues. I found with my laptop, which does not even come close to your system specs, runs Stardock products perfectly... even with 512mb of memory, 64mb video card, and multiple programs running at the same time.

There's a lot of legitimate points but also some oddities.

ObjectZIP and SpringFolders shouldn't be available anymore to new Object Desktop users as we discontinued that ages ago. Not sure how you were even able to get those.

It sounds like there are some shell oddities with your system as IconPackager is one of the more bullet proof things out there.

I purchased Object Desktop in December 2005. And, I have continued to purchase other Stardock products happily and with confidence. Without question I will be renewing my Object Desktop subscription and my WinCustomize subscription because I'm a satisfied customer! Honest! Stardock's Object Desktop can not possibly be causing all the problems he's talking about. He's experiencing: catastrophic failures ...I'm sorry but its not even believable to be from Object Desktop especially while using Object Edit (a very stable program). Icon Packager simply loads icons and doesn't remain in system memory. If he is really experiencing these problems its from something else. Viruses? Trojans? other malware? Anyway, I hope you solve your computer problems. Over the past few days, I've happily purchased CursorXP Plus, Essorant Skin Pack 2, Logitek 2007, and Argos. Object Desktop works great! My desktop has never worked better and looked better! And, I recommend this great product to friends. Nuf said.

Last week I was able to download bootskin and logonstudio from the Stardock Central, but I no longer see them on there, however SpringFolders and Object Zip were and are still there for download. I also downloaded some XML files or something that was meant to refresh the application list, I found the option in one of the menus.

I have used Object Desktop with my OEM drivers, Medion Radeon driver updates from Microsoft Updates and the newest possible ATI Catalyst 6.8 drivers from ATI Technologies Inc. (Why should I be able to run nVidia drivers, are they not for a different brand of card?) I didn't see much difference in performance in either Object Desktop or any of my games. In the update history for the drivers there were only about two specific fixes for the X700series out of a massive list.

I am aware that startup programs might have been slowing things down but I still had the same problems when I had disabled all but the most important programs with Windows Defender (things like iTunes helper which I have never used) but even so I had mostly selected not to load the Object Desktop Components on startup anyway. I had problems just from opening the programs and trying to apply different themes or icon packs

I had no trouble with WindowBlinds btw, merely changing skins worked fine.

Frogboy... you stated, "ObjectZIP and SpringFolders shouldn't be available anymore to new Object Desktop users as we discontinued that ages ago. Not sure how you were even able to get those." Those products are still showing up in Stardock Central for me. So, the user claiming all the issues probably downloaded them through Stardock Central. I still use the SpringFolders to this day without any type of issues.

Necaradan... just for your reference, my other computer has the same video card that you've identified and I had issues with the most recent release of the drivers. I went back two versions and have had no other issues. But, it must be noted that the drivers not only affected Stardock products but other things as well (sometimes the issues were very minor). Can you provide a list of the software you have running on your machine (specifically the processes)? The list will be found by opening up the task manager and then click on the processes tab. I still have a very strong feeling that there is some type of program, spyware, malware, or resource hog causing your problem... trust me, I know from much experience!

Finally, you wrote about your issues with your settings not being saved in Enhanced Dialog... have you went into the Enhanced Dialog configuration settings to update how you want things?  When I first used E Dialog I had the same issue... then someone showed the settings area and all is MUCH better!

Dude I have solved my problems, I unistalled all Strdock Products deleting any leftovers and then used System Restore to a point immediatelty before installing Stardock Central to be totally sure all regisrty entries are gone and anything that changed shell settings was back to what it was before. Now the pc runs perfectly again, mspaint opens again, the Desktop is fixed, and obviously IE7 works cause I'm here posting. How do you explain it? I have up to date eTrust AntiVirus and Windows Defender for ad/spyware and I think they do their respective jobs quite well, I have not had trouble with intrusions for years and on a different computer at that. I also use the new free Windows OneCare scanner every 30 days like the Live Toolbar tells me to. Otherwise I get annoying yellow shields showing up tellng me I'm not safe.

Im also not sto0pid, I know how to change settings. That was my exact problem, I changed the settings with the drop down menu, but it just kept on changing back to detail view.
Well, Dude, just because you deleted all traces of Stardock products and did a restore does not clearly mean that the products was causing your problem. In fact, you MAY be running software on your machine that is conflicting with a specific Stardock product, or your video drivers are still not correct. By the way... I can tell you that MSPaint would not stop running because of Stardock products... none of the products make any changes to the program, its registry settings, etc.

Finally, before deleting all of the products off your machine, had you considered contacting Stardock support? Or providing the information that was requested so that the Stardock admins could help, or even us citizens that have extensive use of their products? I truly believe we could have narrowed down the issues with your computer if you had provided us a clear list of the processes running on your computer. But, instead, you decided to create this thread whining about something that you truly can not substantiate.

You changed your settings in the drop down menu???  In the Enhanced Dialog settings???  Impossible.  The settings area of the Enhanced Dialog configuration are checkboxes... It sounds as if you were just clicking on the dropdowns within the standard dialog area.  You have to RUN the Enhanced Dialog software (click on run from the Stardock Central is one way) and you can get access to those options.

You are wrong. It is a drop down menu, while most of the setting options are checkboxes a few are drop down menus, including the view setting. Like I said, I am not stupid, I do know how to change a few simple settings.

I made a post here last week and had not a single response for five days. I deleted that post and reworded it to be more understandable. (It included some not so relevant information on other issues I researched when trying to find fixes for the problems I had. When I reread the post it wasn't very comprehensive) all the issues are included in the first post above

Also I was not only using Object Edit when the DEP started freaking out and my Desktop exploded, I was testing the various programs one after the other (and then unloading them) to see that I still had problems. I was not about to make such a negative post if I was not sure something was wrong. I was going to do a full report on all the components I had downloaded but I just went nuts trying to do so and had to restore. I am just now going to find what processes I am running, all of which were the same when Stardock was installed. But like I said above I have been playing with the Object Desktop for about two weeks I have already tried everything I read on this and other websites (wincustomise for instance) I have even made comments on Microsoft tech forums to see if anyone has experience that could have helped.

When a system works perfectly before you add a program, breaks after it's added and then works again when the program is removed it's only logical to conclude that the program caused the problem.

They are also the only ones that are marked "Shipped With OS: Yes" so I assume anyone with WinXPhome sp2 would have these files running also.

According to the task manager I save an extra 2000 handles and about 60mb on PFusage. While in this state the Process tab shows that explorer.exe itself is the program using the most amount of memory, handles and GDI objects.

I am off to work and will not be able to respond further at this time.

I love Stardock products - plus run the WinCustomize Browser and all up, I am one happy camper apart from one main issue that has remained with me right from the very first when I eagerly downloaded the Trial versions....

Desktop X and CursorXPPlus simply screw up my system.

I posted a while back regarding this issue but no one ever could resolve it for me and yes, caches were deleted, programs uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
After rebuilding my PC, like the gentleman above, all is well until I download and run Desktop X (winblinds, packager etc have no issues - just Desktop X)

Since I love tinkering with my PC - I've kept installing it (yes I know - duh) but have become extremely good at saving and solving Windows errors

In my experience, after using Desktop X - my system degrades to the point of no return and I face rebuilding or ghosting again

specs below - anyone keen to solve?

Hi Necaradan:

Thanks for providing your process list. I think I've found a couple of things that are causing the issues you've described. I can not speak for all of the Stardock products that you've listed problems with, partially because some of them are out of date (i.e. Spring Folders, ObjectZip). I know that I can probably help with IconPackager, Windowblinds, IconX, Enhanced Dialog, CursorXP, and WindowFX. So, give me a minute of your time try and narrow down some things:

1. The icon problems you've described is the ICSI Technology Ltd.: Customized Icon and Label process that is running. This would clearly cause issues with IconPackager, IconX, and Enhanced Dialog. Even though you have disabled it (either from the task manager or whatever) the hook is still there that is controlling the icons. IconPackager will not adjust the icons because this other software has already controlled it. I've known many other users of IconPackager who have had issues with icons not getting changed, issues with reseting icons to the default, or the rebuild icon option not working... all because the ICSI Technology process hook has control. This process would need to be removed fully (uninstalled and the service disabled) in order for IconPackager to work correctly. I can also attest to the fact that this process can play havoc with Windowblinds... partially because Windowblinds has the option of applying icons.

2. I still believe that part of the issues you are describing (after consulting a colleague) is that your updated ATI video drivers are causing the crashes. Many people have reported issues with the last two releases with crashes, freezes, slowdowns, etc. when running some programs (not just Stardock). This is not a problem directly related to Stardock; but, incompatibilities with the drivers with specific hardware in your computer. I would suggest backing the updated drivers out and then retry some of the Stardock products (one at a time) to verify how each program is interacting with each other. By the way, the clistart.exe and keystat.exe files are ATI related files.

Liandral... need a bit more information... could you provide your system specification... Processor, Video Card, Memory, etc. By the way, why are you providing a Windowblinds System Report for a DesktopX and CursorXP issue?

Well, from experience with the forums - usually someone asks for that info so I tried to save time - this was the info asked for previously when I posted my issue (on Desktop X) as I gave the system specs right off the bat but that wasnt wanted apparently

Here's what you asked for - let me know if there is any other info you need...

Liandral... your system specs are very good. In fact, better than mine and many of my colleagues systems. So, narrowing down the problem is not easy. Here are a couple of options:

1. Have you upgraded your video drivers to the most recent release? If so, had you noticed any changes in your system overall?

2. It appears that you are not running the 64bit Windows... am I correct?

3. What objects or themes are you loading in DesktopX?

Finally, I know of many people who have had issues with CursorXP Plus who have a 64 bit processor. There is more recent release of CursorXP Plus that fixes all of the issues. You should check your version number of CursorXP Plus and make sure it is up to date.

This thread is very interesting. I downloaded object desktop and applied the minimus suite. My computer froze half in and half out of the installation and I had to re-boot. Upon re-boot, my computer started acting strangely; hanging, freezing, not responding, and giving all kinds of error messages. So I tried to unload minimus, but it wouldn't do it. I ended up buying another theme and overwriting minimus with the other one. My computer worked fine for a day or so, and then it got so bad that I had to completely restore the entire system back to factory specs. I'm not sure what was going on, but someone in an above thread mentioned possible incompatibility between Stardock products and specific computer hardware. So I will list what I've got below, and hopefully someone will tell me if my problem is a compatibility issue.

By the way, I've been working with the support staff at Stardock on the issues I've been having (although we haven't discussed compatibility issues specifically yet), and I've got to say that the people there are very helpful. They didn't just release a product designed to screw up everyone's computers, so give the support people a try before crapping on the software.

My system has the following: Pentium Extreme 965 (3.73 GHz), Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe Mobo, nVidia GeForce 7950 graphics card, 2GB DDR2, Soundblaster X-Fi Elite. Also, I've got Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with all Microsoft updates, Norton Internet Security 2006 and Counterspy.

script blocking and firewall can screw with some of SD's products.

Yeah, as soon as I saw it I knew it had to be one of the causes. However, like I mentioned I have also tested when this program was disabled.

All this program seems to do is setup the three card reader drive icons. In all the years I've been messing with my pc I never actually noticed this program till I looked yesterday. I have tried with three different versions of my video drivers and can't find any other appropriate ones to try.

If Stardock really conflicts with so many programs that I can't run stuff I've been running for years then unfortunately Stardock will have to take the back seat. (at least until it's more compatible)

btw while CliStart.exe is from ATI, KeyStat.exe is merely a tiny program that lights up in the systray when capslock is on.

In response to cletus23 I came here to crap on the software cause it's Stardock's website and Stardock's forums. In fact as I write this I can see the forum is called -Home/Stadock Support/Object Desktop-. So is this not the right place?
