Changing the Default icon for Favorites entries...

Nothing has worked for me yet!

Ok, I HATE the default blue and white IE icon that is attached to any new Favorites that I store. So I changed the icon for http, URL,... basically everywhere that nasty icon is attached to anything internet related. I did this in IconPackager, and also manually in Tools/Folder Options/File Types. When I open IE and view the Favorites folder, my new icon shows up on all links for a fraction of a second before it is immediately replaced by the default icon again!!!!!!! WTF. When I view my favorites folder in Explorer, all the items have my new icon. In IE, however, they only have this new icon briefly and are replaced. I've tried deleting all temp files, rebuilding cache, rebuilding image files (in IP), but nothing seems to work.

Now, to be clear, I'm not talking about Favicons (custom icons for certain websites), I'm just talking about the ordinary link icon that is associated with new Favorite entries.

Does ANYONE know how to change this - it's so frustrating because I have changed every occurance of the default icon with my new one and yet STILL the old icon prevails. I even tried reshacking IE but that made my iexplorer.exe file HUGE and when I started it is was in some kind of "mode" ... that did not work.

I'm desperate, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have "Apply package icons to Internet Explorer Favorites" selected in "IconPackager > Settings"?

Yup. Doesn't do a thing! I have managed to change it permanently exactly how I like it, but I had to do some Reshacking of these files...

...\system32\url.dll
...\system32\mshtml.dll

If you replace the ugly IE icons there, then all links - old and new - will display with the new icon. This was exactly what I was looking for, its just a shame it takes such drastic measures in order to customize something so simple.

Hope this helps anyone else who has had this problem.

I've found that after changing all the defaults, if I change the location of my favorites folder, the Internet Shortcuts show up displaying the icons that I want. So, it has to do with the nature of the Favorites folder. I know, not a solution, but possibly a step in the right direction?
