Is it ok to DL the lates updates?

I have GC2 0.81a.015 and Multimedia 1.0.039, with casual CTD's.

Is it safe to upgrade to 0.81a.016 and 1.0.042? Are there any major changes?

(Feb 21st is soooo far away...)

If you can update everything (I.E Not only multimedia but the core GC2 release, and the movies if you can get them) then that will make it easier.

Otherwise archive and hope that it works, If it dosent you can roll back and wait a further 17 days.

It wont kill you

If you can update, good for you. I tried to earlier today, and instead of updating it it 'uninstalled' it from the registry after an error occured in the updating process. Since the version I had has bugs up the wazoo, so much so I can't actually play through a full game, I uninstalled the game first before trying to reinstall it with the update and - bam! An error occured having to do with a thumbs.db_ file missing from the gfx/explosions folder from the install package. Considering they haven't updated the install file yet, I doubt you'll be able to update.

Unless, of course, this isn't just me that has this issue? I saw another post about it earlier, so I was assuming it was widespread, but perhaps not...

I had the same problem as MutantDwarf. I tried to update, and it uninstalled the game. I then tried to reinstall, and got an error about the thumbs.db_ file.

I have the same problem, I'm sure they will fix it soon seeing that they just updated the multimedia files today. Its good to have these things now then when the game comes out and having a million plus people(+/- 500,000) experience it

Ahah! After doing some checking around, the California server is working fine, even with the .sdc file downloaded from the (much faster) Chicago server. Probably means the .xml file on the Chicago server is borked or something.

The media pack, on the other hand, doesn't work at all. I tried downloading it from the Cali server, and got an error message (url not found), and then on the Chicago server. No error message that time, but it also didn't actually do anything.

Oh well. Hopefully the new build will at least be stable enough to not crash every 45 minutes. And maybe this time I'll be able to actually save a ship design without a CTD!

I have downloaded all the media updates offered and I have had no problems. All of the updates are very small and I assume they are just minor corrections.

The one thing that puzzles me is that my game version is 0.91[b].002 and not the 0.81a.015 mentioned above. I don't think there is a lot of difference my beta version and the .81 but who knows?

I might also mention that I had the gamma version, intro movie and all, for about a week until it was corrupted by a media update. After reinstalling, the .91x is what I wound up with

It is, if you can get it i recommend you keep it don't install anything else

Hmm... I guess I'll stick with the current version for a while - even though I'm very tempted.

Oh well. I can wait. Or not?

How does one access the California server??? I see no option in Stardock Central to default to any particular server
for installing GCII beta.

SDC Tools-Settings-Internet has a selection box

So any word yet on any sort of fix within the day? It is quite lame that I cannot play, though I did mistakenly delete it...

I thought the 0.91x was the gamma version?

In my case I think it is somewhat less and may be no different from the other betas. At one point I had the gamma version. There was no mistaking it. The graphics were different, the intro movie was included and the default ship designs were included. It was fun to have it but I did get a lot of ctd and I don't think I had access to the patches.

After about a week of enjoying the gamma a large media update appeared on SDC and I went for it. When I started the game it was back to the old beta. Tried a system restore to get it back but no joy. SDC then offered me an update to the version I have now (which is not the gamma) and since then I have been getting regular mm updates but they are all small like a patch or very small change.

Over the last week or so my ctd have gone away entirely and the game is playing as smooth as silk but still minus the goodies that I had and lost.

18 days and counting....

0.91x is basically just an SDC hiccup (gammas started at 0.92). The latest build is 0.99zz.004, only available to actual gamma testers.

Believe me, if you had the actual gamma, you'd know it

Is there a place we can go just to find out what the devs are up to, My friday night just crashed and i'm not going to study for college classes, I want to construct ships and conquer a galaxy

Oh yes, I know what I have now is not the gamma and your hiccup description is a good way to put it.

Previously, I did have the .92 gamma and like you say there is no way to mistake it from the beta. The difference were so numerous I can't list them all but they included, the intro movie, the attack ship default designs and a tweaked look for the leaders (well, mainly notice the terran leader). The down side was that I did not get the gamma version updates and my version was quite playable but not bug free.

What I do not remember seeing and I hope is in the final are a lot of new random events in addition to the old ones that we know and love.

I successfully downloaded the .016 beta from the California server , but the multimedia download fails on both
California and Chicago servers. Is ther no way to get this game together so it will install properly. This is a very frustrating mess and I hear NOT a word from Stardock that they are addressing it.

NOT a word from Stardock that they are addressing it.

I think they are pretty much focused on getting the game out and those that can't get the beta to dl right are doomed to wait for the release.

I wanted to d/l the beta to a new computer recently and it cannot be done. They finally emailed me and said I will have to wait for release. All the old games load fine on the new box but no way with the beta.

Has anyone tried installing this version on a clean machine, rather than an update (Version 0.81a.016 is what I see on SDC now). I'm getting an error:

Extract: C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\temp\base\Gfx\Explosions\Thumbs.db_0 (file not found)
Result: Installation failed(27)

I've tried from both the Chicago and the California servers.

Thanks

You shouldn't try downloading the updates.   Beta 5 was the last public update.  Anything else is going to be debris from the gamma and so, at best, you'll get some non-critical fiels that will likely result in installation errors and a nonfunctional beta.

Thanks for the final word, Brad. We can wait...

Thanks for that heads up but I am incredulous that Stardock would allow SDC to prompt a download that is useless and perhaps harmful.

Pardon me but I'm going to have to mull on that for a while
