Main campaign vs custom maps

My first post in these forums.....

I'm an experienced TBS player but considering I didn't play the original GalCiv for quite a long time after its 2003 release, what do you advise as the best approach to tackle the learning curve of this upcoming beast we're all awaiting for ( at least for those who didn't had the time to contribute for the beta like me ) ??? == 1) a small custom galaxy map? 2) the main SP campaign right off the bat? 3 ) is there a tutorial?

Great job Stardock

My personal suggestion is to load up a huge map, cakewalk difficulty, 3 opponents. This will give you space to expand and explore before encountering the first enemy, and it'll be easy enough that you'll be able to play around with things without fear of screwing up too badly.

If you have the expansion to GC1, Altarian Prophecy, you can get a taste of campaigns.

id say go for the campaing, usually in games the beginning missions of the campaign serve as the tutorial or are easy enough to just pick up as you go however i dont know how the campaign in GalCiv2 is structured since i only have access to the beta

I'll be going with the Campaign. Have to see what those crafty aliens & Stardock has in store for us!

I'd stick with the campaign missions.  The first few do a good job setting you up with learning the basics. You play with a simplified tech tree, making research less overwhelming.  You have a simple, specific directive (ex. take planet X), opposed to "take over the galaxy by any means necessary". And you play with a limited number of players on a small, custom made map, so you can learn the map and, if you replay, you'll have a better idea going into it what you'll need to do to win.

Of course, the campaign can be a bit more action-packed, since the map is smaller and there is a direct goal for both sides. A gigantic map will let you ease into the experience with minimum alien interference.

ALso, without a doubt, go through the video tutorials to get a basic understanding of the core game mechanics. It'll probably be the most helpful of the bunch
