Gamespy has the Gamma Questions

Color me confused or I have not had enough java yet.

"All of a sudden older technology becomes more viable because it miniaturizes and gets cheaper, allowing the player to crank it out quicker."

I am not exactly sure what question to ask on this one. Its still early here and I am only on my second cup of java.

For example:
Laser 1 Size 11
w/10% mini = Size 10
w/+15% mini = Size 8
w/+25% mini = Size 6
w/+25% mini = Size 3

Not that you would want to bring a laser to a disruptor/graviton/photon torpedo fight but hey beats nothing and if the other folks have no shielding its still damage right?

Anywho, is this what everyone else was thinking when they read it?

I believe what the article states is in error--in my experience older parts do not automatically miniturize, but do so at the same rate as new parts based on your mini ability. And new parts are generally smaller than old parts anyway (at least, higher generations of the same part are).

I also think miniaturization only extends the size value of the hulls, it doesn't decrease the size of the parts. Which boils down to the same in the end, it's only a matter of the numbers involved. So the article is in error or at least uses phrasing capable of being misunderstood.
Never mind, it's very positive in total.

I believe miniaturization affects both the space on a hull as well as component sizes. I've seen basic level sensors go down to a size of 1 after some miniaturization was researched.

You're sure? They are different for the different hull sizes, but I don't think they change (in the Beta, that is).

I'll check the gamma tonight and get back to you on it.

Thanks! I don't have it installed at the moment, trying to get some work done before the final version comes out...

Well... part of it is when you research, say, laser II, that's the same as laser I, only smaller. There's often a jump in size when moving from one class to another, say, lasers to plasma weapons.

Yeah like the first iteration of Plasma will be larger than say a laser V , but the 2nd or 3rd will be same size or smaller.

He should have said:

All of a sudden older technology becomes more viable because
if the enemy adapts to your weapons with strong counter-measure defenses you will need to switch to a less advanced alternative weapon.

Also:
Unlike the original game, in Galactic Civilizations II the player will have to outfit their spaceships to utilize one of three different types of weapons (lasers, mass drivers, missiles) and three different types of defenses (shields, chass, and point defenses) along with a whole host of other modules.
