Diplomacy based on knowledge?

I didn't find this info anywhere, so I'm asking.

I've read about the bonuses/penalties for the diplomatic relations with other races being dependant on your ethical standings, on your military superiority etc.. That's IMO a great system.

The question is whether a newly met alien race automatically gets these bonuses and penalties at the moment you've met them or are first contacts not burdened with this and the standing change accordingly to your knowledge on their race and vice versa?

Also is it possible to find an alien race (spy ship?) without their knowledge? So that you would be able to know more about them before making contact - perhaps even greeting them with an invasion if you think the race is totally incompatible to yours?

Is this theme so boring or what?

I don't have the answers you are looking for. But I did read your questions.

I believe the way things worked in GC1 was that the alien races started out neutral to you when they first met you, and then slowly moved positive or negative depending on your ethical alignment and theirs.

Ok, I guess this can simulate the gradual info gathering. Perhaps it was even triggered by it.

I'd really like to know about the spying issue... The developers probably don't have the time to read and answer every question. It's not that big an issue.

So far as I know, it is not possible to discover an alien race through spying. I think it would be a nice addition at some future point, but I'm not sure how the diplomacy window could be reworked to handle a race that you knew about but they didn't know you. A simple popup that said something like "Our spies working in the Altarian Empire have discovered a previously unknown race called the Iconians. They are reported to have a neutral alignment and their homeworld is located somewhere in sector x,y." would probably be relatively easy to add.

That is an excellent idea.

Yes, true. I didn't think about it, but the diplomacy window as it is really isn't complex enough to hold such info. Meh, there will always be an idea that can't be integrated anymore.
