Totally Confused/Someone Please Advise/Help!

I realize this will probably be the dumb question of the week, but since I'm new to skinning, the terminology, and the programs involved I really need some help. And if this is in the wrong place, or not appropriate.....sorry, just ran into a wall and need help.

I purchased Object Desktop for $49.95 almost a year ago, I recieved an email with my reg codes for Stardock Central Component Manager, Object Desktop 2004 , ObjectDock Plus (ODNT Discount), and WinCustomize Subscription I installed the programs, and it seemed all was fine. I did notice that I constantly had problem with Stardock Central Component Manager, it never really showed information about me and my downloads. So first, now when I click Stardock Central it takes me to the main Stardock Central Window with all the product news on it and then a smaller update box comes up called Stardoc Central Updates" with most of the programs listed in it, the verions, size, and two boxes at the bottom "Update them now" or Update them later". So since I assumed that I would be untitled to WB5 and also the new version of DesktopX (I believe it's 3), I expected to get them there. When I hit update it takes me to a screen that has 3 programs on it, Wincustomize Tray, Wincustomize Browser and Kryptonite. The only one that shows an install availabe when highlighted is Kryptonite. So where have I gone wrong? I spent most of last night trying to get it to give me the updated version of DTX! I managed to download the public version but haven't done anything with it, is that what you get with the ODNT package? I then went to the Wincustomize software tab, thinking I could get it there, I saw that there was a "pro" and "standard" version. So I clicked the standard verion to download, and it took me to download.com. The program was listed as DTX 3.1, but when I clicked the download button, the filename was DesktopX_public. Is that the same thing as the standard version? And if so, how will I register/activate it when I install it? Do I use my ODNT code? I had pretty much the same problem with Window Blinds5. I was just under the impression, and from my renewal email that once I purchased OD, all these other programs were part of it, and per the email and here's an exerpt "This will give you access to new components and upgrades to current components for one more year." So can someone please tell me where I'm going wrong and what I'm not understanding? When I try to run certain Desktop Objects (could be widgets), on install I get a message saying they were created with a newer version, yada, yada. But half the time I can't install them because when I hit yes, it locks the whole thing up. Get the must terminate thing, etc. I'm sorry if I'm not making sense, and I'm sorry to go dumping on y'all, but I wish people would realize that not everyone is an expert at this stuff, and yeah, contrary to popular belief, no one was born skinning, everyone had to start somewhere!
If anyone is willing to help solve this for me, I can provide screenshots of what I've been talking about to illustrate it, and anything else you need. Or, is it possible that when I renew per the email, they will send me another email with the OD reg code and download link and I just do that and start from scratch? If that's the case, only one burning question! Do I uninstall all the old stuff? And if so, what will happen to everything I've downloaded (widgets, cursors, icons, etc.)? Just a thought.
I really appreciate your help! And thanks so much!

whoa...

first, when you received your confirmation email with the ODNT serial and link to SDC...after you downloaded SDC, did you register your ODNT serial? Bottom right of SDC - register - when the box comes up, use the pull down menu and find Object Desktop then put in the serial and 'update'.

What shows when you click the icons on the left side of SDC - like Object Desktop? Once you register your Object Desktop Serial, all the programs should show up.

Okay, well to the first question, I must have registered it, cause I sent to serial number look-up and put in my email address, and they sent me the reg codes for the 4 things I mentioned above. So it must be registered, right? And I also just hit the registration info on the bottom right corner, and it does show that it's registered to me, and all info is correct.

I took a couple screen captures of what happens when I hit SDC, am going to try to insert them. Well, never mind that, but the first thing I get are two windows, the background has current news and the foreground has a box that shows all the program and availability of updates. So I hit update now, and all I get is a main window with 3 programs listed Wincustomize Tray, Wincustomize Browser and Kryptonite. So I don't know why it showed me a long list of OD progs, and then nothing. Like I said I have two screen shots, if you have an email I could send them to you, I just don't know how to insert one here. It asked for a URL, and unless someone can educate me, I don't have a URL on my computer, do I?

And ref your last sentence/question, I just tried and can't even get the at to come up anymore.

leeatsjt,

I wrote a mini tutorial on installing Object Desktop for beginners here http://corkyo.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?SID=5463&AID=83625

If you follow the instructions for registering and settings, you should be able to verify the date your subscription good to - as well as being able to access the most recent "Official" release versions.

The reason you see the WinCustomize Browser, WinCustomize Tray, and Kryptonite offered is that you have the "WinCustomize" category selected in the list displayed in the left pane of Stardock Central window.

You will need to select (click on) the "Object Desktop" category in the left pane, which will then give you the list of Object Desktop programs in the right pane.

Note - the settings in the mini tutorial mentioned above will prevent any beta versions of the programs from being displayed and offered. Please use these settings to update DesktopX.

After updating DesktopX, please select the "Show pre-release versions" option at the bottom of the Stardock Central window before attempting to install the new version of WindowBlinds. The reason for this is that the beta version "5.00[b].006" uses a better file system for storing your settings, and has higher compatibility with most systems. The next full release is currently set to use this file design - which is a good thing at this point. I won't bother you with more details on this one, just know that your experience with WB5 will be better served by installing version 5.00[b].006, instead of version 5.00.001.

If the component tray program is not currently doing what you expected, you can uinstall it without issue.

Ideally, you would like to have Stardock Central version 2.20.358 installed, but it is not critical if you have a higher numbered "beta" version installed.

Final note - remember that the Object Desktop suite is an annual subscription based software, so as long as your up to date with your subscription - you should be able to sort this out.

Corky (is that how I should address you?),

I wanted to say I appreciate your input, and will do all that you said. But I'm going to give it a break until tomorrow. I've been at this most of the day and am so frustrated that anything I do now is prone to mistakes. Just didn't want you to think I ignored your post and wanted to say thanks. And will let you know tomorrow how your procedures are doing.

Thanks again,

Lee

Lee,

Yes, Corky is correct.

No problem....

Will check back tomorrow evening.

As long as your Object Desktop subscription is current, we should be able to get you set up.

Worse case scenario would be to have you save your downloaded content to a temporary folder, and uninstall the programs via Stardock Central > then uninstall Stardock Central > reboot > and start from scratch.

Hopefully, the procedures in comment #3 will work though.

Thank you guys (or ladies if needed). This stuff is making me crazy! I'm very good at software for the most part, never had any training, just 15+ years of life experience. I even taught myself to use Bryce 5, Vue 5, PSP, Terragen, and Photoshop, but this stuff is kicking my butt! Gees I hate groveling , but hey, in case no one has told you two today, I appreciate you both!

In addition to the issue of the day, I have so many other things that I want to know about! But I do have to admit I feel stupid asking. I just have to hope one of you experts kind of takes me under your wing and helps. Either that or helps with all the questions I have....which are mostly about the way the software works!

Ooooohhhhh mystery! Y'all had better study up! Especially on DESKTOP X, WIDGETS AND DT OBJECTS!

Y'all have a good night!

I just don't know how to insert one {pic} here.

You have to upload the pic at an image hosting site like photobucket or imageshack (both free). They will generate a URL to use, which you can copy and then paste into box when you click image.

Hey All,

Thanks for helping out Lee.  She a good gal.  She's registered on a site that I administrate.  I think between you all suggesting stuff and my putting it together for her, her problems should be resolved.  (I think)
