Warning Latest windows security update causes fatal boot error in XP

After installing trhe latest Windows Security update (not sure which number but it came out today 21 November), my pc will not boot at all.  I tried Last Known Config, Safe Mode, Etc.  None will boot.  This will require a complete repair to fix.  I believe this is a Bootskin problem, or a logon problem.  Unfortunately, to be safe, I will uninstall all object desktop, wincustomize products as they appear to be too risky to use!

"This single patch for Windows XP fixes three different security issues in the Windows Graphics Rendering Engine. The hole is technically a 'Remote Code Execution' vulnerability, but in more simple terms it is the usual kind of problem that could allow a hacker, virus or other malware onto your system. The three areas it fixes are: Enhanced Metafile Vulnerability, Windows Metafile Vulnerability and Graphics Rendering Engine Vulnerability."

Importantly this security update is rated as: Critical. In other words, download it now.

I have automatic update turned ON. I have rebooted three times today. I use bootskin and WB, which one is OD and the other not so much. You mention them both above. Well, I don't see any problems so far...

ok, just completed a complete repair using the XP pro cd.  The only item that has been changed in the repair is the custom logon.  The custom bootskin remains as does the Windowblinds components.  So I guess I have to conclude that the problem lies with the Logon studio component as the computer boots up just fine now.  However I will do some further testing and post any abnormal results here.

reisntalled the custom logon and it is quite apparent that this app causes many problems at least on my system.  The logon screen installed and booted just fine.  However I was unable to access the the internet and several other apps were adversely affected.  Once the logon was set back to default Windows Xp logon, all these problems dissapeared.  I dont reccomend installing this if your specs are close to mine and you have the latest security update installed.

i down/installed object and cursorxp...no problems...i almost finished install of bootskin...BAM! my McAfee detected a trojan horse. luckily i immediately booted this bootskin out of my pc, and i notified stardock about it, and asked for their imput...no answer back...i think this needs a boot patch of it's own, before they offer it!

sorry guys i belive the problem lies in the piticular screen you were tring to load [either bootskin or logon] because i had same problem with a piticular logon screen when loaded my computer would not load up had to use norton goback to fix it and when i deleted that logon and stopped using it problem went away

i've use SD products over 2 years. only issue i haven't resolved is getting bootskin to work on my computer. the 1st version i tried doesn't work. been too lazy to try the others.

surfrod: I've had bootskin installed for 2 yrs even though it's not working for me (yet)...never had a virus or trojan from any stardock/wincustomize download.

greg2: me thinks you're right. quite a few of the logons have the ui file edited, so's as to move parts around and such. depending on your system, it could conflict somehow.

I'm doubting that cause/effect relationship too. The only problems I've ever run into with any of the SD products for the past 5 years has been skin deep, if you will. Nothing system-pernicious.

Also, boot skin and logon studio work fine. In fact, you can even disable them from running at startup and you'll still have your custom logons and boot screens.
