Complete uninstall and reinstall

How to do

I have been getting strange problems with my Object Desktop entities like Windowblinds and Icon X lately and I have tried to look for solutions in the Forums here. Since there is no Search function in the Forums is virtually impossible to find any topics to match my problems let alone answers (please Stardock that has to be easy to implement!!!).

Any way I am now getting tired of the malfunctions and I would like to completely uninstall Object Desktop and maybe also Stardock Central (preferably without loosing skins and suites already downloaded) and the re-install OD and SDC so that it is almost like a virgin installation (although "almost virgin" is a contradiction in terms ).

How do I do this?

Regards,

If you're posting from Stardock, come over to WC - the search is limited, but there is one.

Corky O has been working on various instructional tutorials. At one time I believe he mentioned one for doing a clean reinstall of SDC and the programs, but I don't see it yet. I haven't had to do one, but I'm guessing you want to back skins and themes and such first. Here's a link to his site: Link. The Archiving and Backup up tutorials should help. With the IconX, maybe clearing the cache, if you haven't already might alleviate some of your issues with it.

It's the Icon X not loading issue maily, but I also do not see Windowblinds in the icontray and at startup the Object Desktop splash screen does not show as it used to. That's why I believe there is something major wrong.

There has been a long issue with IconX not running at start if DTX is running at start.  Seems checking the box in DTX (or in some cases just running DTX) negates and blanks out the 'run at start' on IconX - Firedogs Ron and Son Jose had a couple of threads.  I believe they posted something worked but I have limited time to search the WC forum and the moment.  A search of 'icon' or 'iconx' may turn it up & I believe the originator was Haerdalis (if I spelled it correctly).  One worka round is to go into your start folder, right click and create a shortcut to IconX

If you're running WB5 Beta, depending on the version there is no systray icon

I don't recall ever seeing a splash screen unless it's that one that mentions something about smart startup and press esc to hide - I'm thinking if you ever 'hid' it may be a while before you see it again. I'm thinking my disappears until I install the next update.  I know on my spouse's side - DTX configure now comes up whenever she logs on.

Not at the Stardock forums where this can carry over from.

Sorry, I have been busy at work, so have not put this one together yet - but I have permission from Brad to use the images required for my tutorials, and many should be up toward the end of this month.

On Per Bohlin's issues:

1 - The splash screen shows when the "MCP smart startup" option is selected in "Stardock Central > Tools > Settings > "enable MCP smart startup". If you want the splash screen to show, just enable (or toggle by deselecting/reselecting the option if already selected).

It's the Icon X not loading issue maily, but I also do not see Windowblinds in the icontray and at startup

IconX has been exhibiting some inconsistencies with regards to running at start-up, so clearing the cache may help. Make sure to save your theme and unload IconX before clearing the cache (which means deleting the IconX cache folder). After clearing the cache, you can try to reload IconX and apply your theme, and then reboot to check for loading at startup (assuming you select this option in the IconX configuration dialog).

If you are running WindowBlinds 4.x and the system tray icon is not showing, you might try right-clicking the Taskbar > Properties > click the "Customize" button in the notification area section, and look to see if the icon is listed in the Current Items or Past Items. If so, see if the "Always hide" option has been selected - change to "Hide when inactive" or use the "Restore Defaults" button to reset the notification area icon settings.

Note - if you are running WindowBlinds 5 beta (version 4.90, not 4.95) then the WB tray icon is not part of the program. It (the tray icon) was restored in version 4.95 - so this would be the reason the missing icon.

Complete uninstall/reinstall:

This procedure should be the last course of action in most cases, and "only" applies if you are removing "ALL STARDOCK PROGRAMS that are listed as installed in Stardock Central".

If you decide to perform a complete uninstall, you can use the following procedure:

1 - Start IconPackager (if you are running it) > Tools > Restore all Icons > click "Yes" to confirm > click "OK" to apply.

2 - Repeat step #1 for the "Restore all Cursors" and "Rebuild Icon Cache" options under the Tools menu in IconPackager.

3 - Unload WindowBlinds

4 - Deselect any options to "Run at startup" (Run when Windows starts) option in other programs, and/or widgets.

5 - If running LogonStudio or Bootskin, start the program and select the default Windows XP theme.

6 - Save any skins/widgets/themes to a temporary folder for use after reinstalling

7 - Right-click the desktop > Properties > Themes tab > select Windows XP in the Theme drop-down list > click "Apply".

8 - Start Stardock Central > select and uninstall each program listed as "installed"

9 - Reboot the computer

10 - Go to "Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > select Stardock Central > click "Change/Remove" > select the "Custom" option, and click "Next" > click the "Select All" button, and then click "Next" until the uninstallation process begins.

Note - you will probably see a "Remove Shared Component" dialog pop-up during the uninstallation. Selecting the "Yes to All" option will remove all shared files, and is only used for complete uninstall procedures to either remove the programs permanently, or to allow for a clean install of the programs).

11 - After uninstallation of Stardock Central is complete, reboot the computer, and then delete any Stardock, Object Desktop, or SDCentral folders in the following locations:

- C:\Program Files

- C:\Program Files\Common Files

- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

- C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data

- C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp

12 - Reboot computer

13 - Reinstall Stardock Central

14 - Use the directions here http://corkyo.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?SID=5463&AID=83625  to reinstall the Object Desktop programs.

That should give you a clean install.

Nice Corky O.

Keep 'em coming...when you have time.

Thanks Corky_O and Bichur for your comments and for caring at all,

Windowblinds trayicon and the splashscreen issue might be moot then judging from the above. For the Icon X issue I will try the above solutions, cleaning cache etc., and worst case do the reinstall.

please tell me where the search function is in this forum!!

@WC it's in the left column, down near the end - 'Browse Site'. It is limited, uses words or parts to search Post Titles, use the drop down to select 'Forums' (the default is Articles).

I still haven't found one at the Stardock Forums.

I have now performed the "procedure" that Corky_O suggested for a complete de-install/re-install process. Unfortunately this was to no avail. Icon X still refuses to start. It starts briefly and the unloads, just like before. This time I haven't even installed Desktop X so that app could not be the culprit.

I am starting to believe that it is something to do with any of the antivirus/spyware control programs I have. Norton Internet security 2005 for example or Spysweeper etc. Anyone heard anything about this?
