I have a widescreen monitor and want to be able to maximise windows in the vertical direction only.

Is this possible?

i think you can do using WindowsFX.

You betcha:

Specify max width and height for all windows

It seems rather overkill to install WindowFX to get this one feature.

Does this affect the position of the window or just change the size?

Both, if you also use the X,Y coordinates.
