The "Strategy First" icon - what are they holding?

The ICON that comes up first when you start GalCiv is obviously from the producer, Strategy First. It contains 4 beings each holding something. The first (from left to right) is obviously a shield. The second looks like it might be a hand grenade. But I have not been able to guess what the other two are. Is the last one a football (US style)?

Guess that's the four in the logo, but hmm what's the story....

And I'm sure you're right about the grenade. That character is also wearing a helmet, but a military-style - not a football helmet :)

And is that a ray gun the Space Marine is holding? Seems like a marine should be using a more powerful and accurate weapon.
