Alan,

The 3D screensavers that are included with Windows will no longer work? Are there any error messages?

Try this:

  1. Exit all programs you have installed since your screen saver has stopped working
  2. Right click on the desktop and go to properties
  3. Click the Screen Saver tab
  4. Click Preview
  5. Does it work?
    1. If no, go to step 6
    2. If yes, start another program you exited on step 1 and continue from step 4.
  6. You've found the culprit, have you loaded any programs at all?
    1. If yes, Which program had you loaded last?
    2. If no, you have an issue running this screen saver. Do any other screen savers work?

Let us know of your results!

When 3d acceleration is enabled does the rendering message say that the screen saver can use hardware acceleration on this monitor.
Are your video card drivers up to date.

Direct3d is packaged with DirectX located here. However, an outdated DirectX shouldn't cause this problem. Your system came with the required DirectX to utilize the screensavers on your system. You would get a DirectX dll error if you did not have the proper version.

It sounds like you might need to update your video drivers. If this does not resolve your issue, you might have a videocard problem. Try this:

  • Hold the Windows Key and press R
  • Type "dxdiag" and press enter
  • If a prompt comes up, click "Yes"
  • Click the "Display" tab
  • Click the "Test Direct3D" button and go through the tests

If your system freezes or does not pass the tests, you might need a new videocard.

Yes, it sounds like you'll need to invest in a new videocard, although you might want to double check to make sure your current card is not still under manufacturer warranty.

On a side note, I know my 6800gt has a lifetime warranty
