Printerdriver crashes after Printprocess

Hi everybody, WB5 Beta works all fine on my Computer - with one exception. Every time I print on my Lexmark X7170 an error occured like this (on my PC its in german and i tried to translate):

"USB-Connection: lxbxjswx.exe Error in Application"

A combo box with the selection "quit app" or "debug app." with some read/write codes

I add ervery needed Lexmark-Application on the "per Application Settings" to ignore skinnig incl. runddll32.exe but the error continues. Without WB5 everything is fine. Anybody has an idea, which application must i add to the settings?

Thanx for every suggestion

(The Wincustomize databases had to be reverted, so I am reposting/retyping my response)

What happens when WindowBlinds is unloaded and you try to print? Do you get the same error?

If not, navigate to your C:\Program Files\Lexmark directory and make sure all .exe files from there have been added to the "Per Application" list to be excluded from skinning.  Any application in this list that is excluded from skinning is completely untouched by WindowBlinds, so it must be something else.

Which version of the WindowBlinds 5 Beta do you have and which version of Windows (including service packs)?

Hi Mike, thanx for reply. I used the latest WB5 Beta 4.90(g) and XP Home with SP 2.

When I unload WB everything works without error.

I added all .exe-files from the Lexmark-Directory AND all .exe-Files from the windows\system32\spool-directory - but without effect

Maybe it is a special Problem with the Lexmark Printer-Driver? And perhaps i have to include in per application-settings another win-system-file?

Thanx

Thorsten Herwig, I've been having problems with spoolsrv.exe crashing also. Try adding it to your exclusion list. I haven't tried it myself because I have six different printers and plotters running on my LAN and it's a service not an app. I'm afraid I'd screw something up and I can always print from another station.

Hi Thorsten

Yes, as Lantec said, the spoolsv.exe file located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\ is used by your printer.

Another file I know that Lexmark uses is lexbces.exe. This file should also be located at C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Try adding these two files to the "Per Application" list to be excluded from skinning and let us know what happens.

i wanted to thank both mike and lantec for these replies. i tried both options but neither worked. i "per application"ed every single file i saw linked to lexmark & the poolsrv.exe to no avail... :/ will try re-installing the whole wb5beta from scratch (did a complete uninstall of wb all together this time) and will keep you posted if it works.

At least for me, I've found the "per application" thing to work goofy, or not at all. Regardless of program I've tried it on (within exception of IE7 Beta).. So I don't even mention it anymore. heh

Hi Laoran, that´s my opinion too. I think WB5 is in early Beta and hopefully there r many bugfixes during the first regular release.

my prob with the Lexmark Printer continues on. I put ervery damn .exe-file in the "per-app-settings", but nothing changes.

@milksama: I don not have the lexbces.exe-file on my pc

Try the newest release of WindowBlinds and see if it resolves your problem. There was just an update yesterday.

Is this a consistent issue (easy to reproduce)?

Let us know if the newest version resolves your issue or not.

Hi mike and all others,  i downloaded the new release, but - the error continues.

What i do next is to uninstalll the beta WB5 and reinstall WB4.6 and wait for the final releas. up to this time i will miss my beauti Vista-Skin, but ok. I have to work on my PC - and not to annoy me

@Mike Yes, this is a consistent issue. What do you mean with "easy to reproduce"?)

Perhaps, someone posts the solution in the meantime.

What support would probably like is a step by step to how the error occurs, along with a detailed description of your system. Then they will try to reproduce it on their machines. What would also help is the debug info produced during the error. Maybe a screenshot of the error message. The more info they have the more chance they have to track down the problem.

Ok. What happens is always the same.

From ervery app i print with the Lexmark X7170 the error occurs.

Can you install Smart Exception (free apps part of SDC) and then see if it logs anything about the crash.

Also does the crash dialog have any details?

I also have intermitent problems with "per application" settings. Every once in a while, WB will start to skin the SystemSuite firewall pop-up. The skin will quickly go away, but it has already crashed the firewall (or at least it freezes with the dialog up, I can't click anything). It's hard to recreate because it happens so infrequently. I do have all SystemSuite related files on the "per application" exclusion list.

If an excluded window is skinning then most likely it is currently not responding.  Not responding windows get skinned by explorer (it is complicated, but it is how XP does  'ghost windows' for non responding windows).  So its not WB that makes it not responding, its becoming not responding which causes it to skin.

@Neil

I installed Smart Exeption, but no error about the Printer Crash was reported to this Tool.

I tried to insert a screenshot of the error-dialog in this forum, but I don´t know, how can i do this. Any Ideas?

Thanks

Thorsten: As Lantec said, we are going to try to have your problem occur over here, so we can look into it and determine the cause.  Could you acquire a screenshot of the problem occuring, upload it to a fileserver here, and reference it in your reply? Could you also run Silent Runners and do the same with that output file?

OK - But please tell me, how can i upload files in this forum?

First, goto the link (underlined "here") in #16. Upload the screenshot you have to that server. That server/site will give you an URL or link. Copy that link to the "link" button above the "add your Comments:" or you can simply copy the URL into the Comments box.

Is Thorston's Graphics card compatible with WB5? Seems a little old...

scorpio-logic: It might not be fully compatible, but it doesn't make sense that Thorston would come across a program crash only when printing.  Methinks it has something to do with the proprietary Lexmark software. I believe that by adding the printer through the Printers/Faxes interface and only loading the drivers (no Lex-ware) this problem might be averted.
