Icon annoyances

can we all just get along?

They way icons work in Object Desktop are a bit annoying.

Object Doc can use PNGs and individual icos, and icos extracted from exes.

Object Bar can use individual icos, and icons inside of icls, but not pngs.

For example there is an icon within a theme that I am using in the icl file. If I want to use that icon for IE on Object Dock I cannot unless there is a png or seperate icon that is the same image.

I think that across ALL stardock applications we should be able to use individual icon files, pngs, and icons from within icls

Icon Packager can not use pngs either.

We should have a little more freedom and chesiveness to the way that "icons" are handled within OD and things should be more universal.

Thanks,

Thank you for your input on this matter. You are correct that it would make things a lot easier to have one full set of accepted icons universal across all our software. We are constantly working on making our software more robust and complete. It's very likely this support will be added in future releases.

Have you checked out "Icon Developer"? In this program, you can turn any image (including .png) into a .ico(which is an available icon format in every program).

Icon Developer can also extract an icon from an *.icl. You can then save it as a *.png or individual *.ico.

Yes, I've played with Icon Developer in the past and like it a lot. I understand that this is a workaround, and it's not too much of a pain for the odd icon or two, etc. I do think being able to make the formats more universal (allowing each app to read all formats) is a more elegant solution, esp. if someone is dealing with a bunch of images that they want to put together for a theme. They can save them all as pngs and/or package them as an icl for a single location to go to for ALL of their icon needs, including those for Object Dock.

IOW, we are not necessarily stuck since we have IconDev, but something more elegant and end-user manageable (read EASY :-Þ) is ultimately preferrable.

Hey, thanks for reading!

Just a slight correction..... ObjectDock is not part of Object Desktop.

But yeah, I agree that it can get somewhat annoying. RightClick can use ico, or bmp files, but not png, and that's just silly IMHO. Who would want to use bmp nowdays?

chesiveness

And a question of curiosity ....... what is that word?
