Whoa, I'm confused - major changes?

Okay, either something wacko is happening, or something wacko _had_ happened.
I DL'd the game on Saturday. Today, I ran the Dregin thing again and found another few Megs of stuff to get, so I did. Things I've noticed now:
1) Techs were coming fast and furious - man, I was getting new improvements faster than I could build them.
2) Techs were different - Now I'm getting XXXX Theory, etc.
3) I'm actually _doing_well_. I think it's the slower pace, I'm not getting overwhelmed.
Can someone explain what happened? It said I was wunning Beta3 before, but based on what I read here, it sounds like I had the the engine of beta2 and the opening graphic of beta3. It's weirding me out...
Oh well, I'm having _way_ more fun now.
