area behind Dock "bar"

When at my desktop, my dock (set to auto order) shows, but the band of wallpaper behind it goes black for the length of the screen. I have the dock on the right, but I tried on the bottom, and the same thing happened. If I maximize a window, no problem, the wiondow expands to the entire screen and is visible in the problem area. Running a Dell Inspiron 600m with a Mobolity Radeon 9000. Any ideas?

You should try updating your video drivers. I've not heard of this specific issue before with Objectdock, but outdated drivers could cause video artifacts such as those.

Also make sure there are no active objects on your desktop:

-Right click anywhere on your desktop, select Properties
-Click the Desktop tab
-Click the "Customize Desktop..." button
-Click the "Web" tab
-Make sure that all checkboxes are deselected

It's well known that Windows can encounter issues when using active desktop.
