Much more to WC than just great skins
from
WinCustomize Forums
Don't be fooled by the techy appearance and its name, WinCustomize. Beneath all those superb skins and beautiful wallpapers lies a very different community than many others in the web. Maybe I have not delved deep enough into the forums, but so far I have not seen any childish arguments and/or name-calling for that matter. I can say it's a good breather for me, because being a gamer, I constantly visit gaming forums which, unfortunately, are dominated by the "your mother is a- , your father is a-" mentality bunch. It gets quite sickening sometimes to see an otherwise peaceful exchange of ideas turn into an ugly exchange of profanity. Maybe you can argue that many users of WC are adults themselves and therefore are more tactful and matured in thought and speech, but I have seen too in some forums in which the adults themselves catalyse the arguments.
I in my part feel kinda bad because I will not be able to contribute to the 2000-subscriber target, considering the amount of stuff I've taken off this site for free. I remember of a class assignment I had to complete a while ago. I put in my every effort and I did a very good writeup on the topic. My classmates, realizing the amount of content I had in my report, decided to "have a look" at it. A few hours later, almost every one in the class had a copy of my report. It was really a frustrating experience, until I realized just as I type this post that I'd been doing the same, taking the work of dedicated skinners "just like that". Why can't I subscribe, you ask? Very simple: I am still a student and therefore I am not earning. I am lucky enough that my dad even allow me to use the computer, considering the amount of study time it has taken up. Mind you, this is not escapism, as in "Oh, forgive him; he's still a student, so he can't subscribe". I would very much love to subscribe and participate actively here because even I am a Science student, my passion lies in computing. It's hard to really stray from the few professional courses over here, because there just isn't enough variety. You can forget about going into the music industry- only a select few, the really talented ones, really succeed. Even so, most, if not all of them go elsewhere.
I guess the least I can do is to direct more people to this site. Whenever I show my system to my peers, they are bound to ask "Damn, where'd you get that from?!" and I would happily direct them here. They are potential subscribers anyway. I also make a point to tell them to visit the forums. Whenever they are in a fix with a certain thing they would ask me for the solution, and I put on my Yoda-slang "In the forums, your answer lie". When you find something that's really good, you just gotta tell everyone. I was amazed when a minute ago I read dharmagrl's post- something so personal, on a tech wizard forum- and to receive positive responses. And I'm always in for a good laugh at your witty remarks (especially the sarcastic "Bichur for Whine Moderator" post). Gosh, I can't shake off the image of that bouncing sign. My brother thinks I'm crazy laughing to myself.
I could go on and on.
