Some idea for PowerUser.tv

So here I am..at the lake..

I listened to a lot of podcasts on the way up north today and have some ideas I'd like to share.

The Podcsts

1) I like our segment based system but think when we get more episodes going we should redo the RSS to be by episode instead of by segment.

2) I think we should release our episodes on Monday morning EST.  So even if we finish everything on Friday, wait until Monday to actually launch it so that we aren't "end of week" stuff.  This would start once we have 5 episodes.

3) I think we should have a Sponsors section where the Neowin and WC BUTTONs should go on the right side of the page.  This way, we may be able to eventually pick up more sponsors.  Neowin and WC have a lot of friends who might be willing to help push Poweruser.tv in exchange for linkage.

4) To do good episodes, we couldn't just link the 3 segments together. The intro to each segment would have to be tweaked. I.e. right now segments have their own intro.

5) I think one of the segments should be called "Tech Round Table" in which Kristin and 3 guests basically "shoot the shit" about whatever they think is interesting to power users.  It could be tlak about the latest sci-fi movie, a good book we've read, a new computer case we'v emessed with, whatever.

6) We would need to make use of the "bookmark" feature on iTunes so people could pick and choose which segments, etc.

7) Overlal format would thus be 3 9-12 min segments and 1 15 minute round-table segment.

8) Once the channel system is up and running, one of the other team members could create a whole seperate sub-set of podcasts they want.  Then powerUser.tv could pick amongst several podcasts each week to include in the episode.

Example:

www.poweruser.tv would pick one or two of its segments from:

  • powergamer.poweruser.tv
  • hardware.poweruser.tv
  • neocommunity.poweruser.tv
  • underyourskin.poweruser.tv
  • softwarethoughts.poweruser.tv
  • TweakWin.poweruser.tv

Each of these channels would be its own show with its own unique RSS feed.  And www.poweruser.tv could syndicate some of these segments with the show.  With editing, Kristin would be the overall host of the show with other segments being hosted by panel leaders or something.

9) I think our round table thing should involve a IRC channel where people would know that we do our round table at a set time each week and that people could join an IRC question and suggest things to talk about, etc. and we could then say "Xirvon on our IRC channel is asking what we think about the Google/Microsoft hiring lawsuit.."  This in turn encourages people to want to participate and helps motivate our audience that they're part of the show.

1) I agree that by episode would be a better "business" strategy as, I'd have to listen to the entire episode to hear the segment that I wanted. However, as a listener, I would prefer to just hear the segment that truely interests me. (Maybe that way I can avoid the fellatio jokes?)

2) I think whenever it's released, there should be something I can sign up for that will notify me that it is complete and available.

3) I wouldn't be opposed to hearing "This segment is brought to you by [insert company/website here]. Beyond that adds and plugs can get annoying fast. (even Stardock plugs...)

4) Even linked together, to have intros for each segment is perfectly acceptable

5)& 9) I think that's a great idea, but perhaps open it up emails as well? Have someone pick an email or two throughout the week to cover, and then include one or two topics chosen by the IRC people. Maybe, you could post polls on topics that you're prepared to cover, and listeners could vote on what they want covered?

6) Yep.

7) Double Yep.

8) Why would I listen to www.poweruser.tv if I can get the segments I really want elsewhere? I'm not going to sit through 30 minutes of headline news to hear something about what happened in Israel today when I can hop onto Google News and find it immediately. (please forgive the slightly lower tech example)

8) Most people don't want/won't go through all the sub-forums.  Us being able to supplement other segments from other channels of poweruser.tv allows for more people to be involved in its production.

Also, I agree, we should have some sort of email sign up so we can email people that a new episode is available.

If you really wanted to do something dynamic, you could always get some Shoutcast streams and maybe do a live show once a month or so. Open up the phone lines and take calls live on the air.

I know someone who works here who has all the equipment to pull that off.

hehehe...

For linking episodes, you could create the episode first, then break it into the segments ans add all of the intros, etc.
