Scrap yard electromagnet. Works everytime. Then the ballpeen as backup security.

Good ideas all but I do not have those options, the person I am doing this for wants to give this away without spending any or very little money. Actually they have three PC's they are donating to some organization.

You can try a program called BCWipe.

Here's a link so you can read more about it.

Hope this helps you out.

donating is the theme of this project so here is my part.

i found your e-mail by clicking on your name.

i have sent you a program for just such things. becareful with it as it WILL whipe out every thing on the boot drive. you'll have to unzip the file and copy the contents to a floppy disk. the disk will be bootable, just folow the instructions and let it run. depending on the size of the drive, it could take several houres. i got it from a service shop a while back when i was going to sell an old hard drive. i'm not sure where it's from but it was free and works like a charm!

P.S. i hope people take this as an example and donate thier old equipment. i know most organizations will exept them.

I'm a big fan of a program from East-tec called "Eraser". Has the ability to delete beyond recovery, past the DOD Standards. Also cleans up the computer nicely of unwanted temporary files etc.

Thanks everyone. I ended up using Eraser, great program. Seemed less obtrusive than BCWipe.

SureDelete is another that'll wipe a drive clean but will also clean just clean selected folders, etc.
