VoIP - A collection of links

thanks to Software Developer mag...

Well, I used an internet phone way back in 1996-7ish time frame and it was need, but a bit buggy and slow... like using a walkie talkie.

There are many services out there now, TeamSpeak being one I like for walkie talkie like use and great for team communication in games...

Here is a group of links, which was published in Software Developer. Anyone use any of these? Makes me want to try it out again:

Two free VoIP phone services:
IBM Bamba Phone
Free Phone

Other VoIP related sites:
GnomeMeeting
VOIP Phones
SIP Foundry
VoIPEvents
Pronexus
Envox
Brekeke
Asterisk - the Open Source PBX!

Makes me want to start up a company, which provides service to small-medium sized businesses looking to replace their PBX system with one of these, as this looks to be the biggest advantage to companys... reduced cost of doing business... any takers?

Vonage - I've been using Vonage as our only phone service (except for the cell phone) since October, 2004. It's great.

I used Vonage for 6 months or so and it was great. I'm now using Lingo because of their better international plans, and am very happy with them as well. I've not had a 'normal' phone for more than a year. The sound quality is great, the reliability as good as my internet connection, and the extra features are outstanding--all for a fraction of the price traditional telcoms want.

I have had Vonage for 1.5 years. I originally got it so I could get rid of Sprint. The service is fantastic and feature packed for less than half what I was paying Sprint, and unlike Sprint, the bill is the exact same price every month. I will NEVER go back.

alas, one of the reasons I posted it was to look at the open source type stuff going on.

I neglected Skype and Vonage, because I just forgot about them, even though Skype was mentioned in the article for it's strictly proprietary communication protocol... after all they were some of the same folks behind Kazaa.

Thanks.

Although still in beta, VoIPBuster kicks ass. It has FREE LANDLINDE TELEPHONE CALLS in 15 popular destinations (US, UK, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Italy, Greece, Switzerland etc...)

the only thing is that if you are a free user the calls will last only for a minute, but if you donate 1 euro to those folks then the calls are unlimited for 6 months, but beware not to screw up your subscription by dialling mobile numbers. IT IS ONLY FOR LANDLINE NUMBERS.
