Unaligned Overlords

Has anyone noticed there are 8 unaligned players in the Top 25 (Overall Scores)? I would think that with their skills, they would want to join an empire.

If any of the unaligned players read this, please consider joining an empire. Not necessarily the Fellowship, but any which you feel comfortable. We really have a lot of fun chatting and our friendly little competition has really made the game more fun!

But...if you would like to join the Fellowship of the Ring empire... ;)

I second that notion. We need to get the lone gunmen off the street! Of course, I could be vulturish and suggest those sociable, and some might say sociopathic, pirates I hang around with, but everyone knows I want people in empires in general. :) And, of course, I mean empires that are designed to recruit and accomodate more than one person. An empire of one is still a lone gunman.

Actually, I think they should remain unaligned. Just one of these mega-players joining any one empire could seriously disrupt the entire empire ranking. What's to stop these players all joining one empire? Nothing.

Cirrhosis, free agents have always swung the balance of power in the Metaverse. For as long as I have known, it has always been a situation where even one high scoring player could tip the balance. Even if the lone gunmen all form some sort of Metaverse I-League to protest the normal empire structure, wouldn't it then be a mission of the other empires to take on this worthy competitor? What would make that different from any other empire that once called itself king? The is no dynasty in the Metaverse. Ask Apolyton, the Euros, GROSS, the MWC, and others from before my time on the forum.

Would be nice if we recruited some of them, but they have to show themselves on the forums before we do that. It's no easy task to engage newcomers to the forums, and that's where effective recruiting is at.

Unless you are one of those locality empires. Jabs at the MWC :p

The unpredictability of the Metaverse empire rankings is what makes it interesting.

The ability for a single powerful Overlord to determine the ranking of big empires is amazing.

We could use a powerful Overlord in the Fellowship! :)

Giving away Senatorships? Maybe you should just join the Fellowship. ;)

LOL... sheesh... I must be good.. so many Empires want me to join them... lol thats 5 different empires who what me ... an ANZAC

See we are popular .. The ANZAC's are more than a fellowship.. they are like family... and the senet are just those with experience.. like big brothers to help protect the new recruits.. We don't need a RING to bind us... ;p

If you remember the Fellowship of the ring only lasted till the end of Book 1 ... ANZACS have outlasted that already... LOL

The ANZAC's are here to stay sorry guys even if it just ends up just being me.. which it won't i'm sure others will answer the call

{ Come one Come ALL .. answer my call to arms }

I used to be unaligned - I joined the MWC pretty much on a whim; I had enough points to nudge them into 1st, so I did.

My objection to joining is the tendency to 'play the metaverse' rather than to play the game. Some of my favorite games have been low scoring ones: playing small galaxies to 7000 points rather than large ones to 15000. If you take a look at my last couple games, you'll see two huge galaxies, one at 8504 points and the other at 14040. The 8504 game was a heckuva lot more fun, and I'd like to have more like that than the 14040 game. The 14040 game went according to plan - I built up my empire until I had substantially more production capacity than anyone else, and then started picking apart the other empires with either small wars or with culture. The 8504 game I started in a poor position, and was always on the verge of being crushed by the Arcean-Torian economic and culture juggernaut, and I finally managed to scrape together an alliance with them before all my worlds flipped.

Playing the metaverse would say that the 14040 game was better. I enjoyed the 8504 game a lot more.

PS An interesting bit-O-trivia: I'm presently the 21st highest ranked player, but if I formed my own solo empire, I'd be the 19th highest ranked empire. :)

Never join an empire at a whim, never leave one at a whim. Unless one has a roving mercenary type character in mind.

Now that is an idea for an enterprising unaligned top player: sell your membership to various empires for terms of service. After the contract expires, quit the current empire and put yourself on the auction block again. Very mercenary, too despicable for my tastes!

Yep - definately possible to fall into this temptation - but really, I strongly urge you to play for enjoyment. You need to join a mob who feel the same way...pirates do stuff at a whim, for whatever gain they happen to desire at that particular point in time...sound like you? Hmmm?

Interesting that not one of them has responded to this thread? Now thats what I call a loyalty to anti-establishment, you've gotta kinda respect that. :)

I remmeber the last few days I was unaligned.

G.R.O.S.S. and MWC were in a dogged race for
5th and 6th with MWC leading by a hair. I had just
made number 1 and was pondering to go with my Michigan
Roots or my Calvin adoring leanings(obviously I made
the right choice!)

My addition did seem to leave MWC in the dust as at the
time I represented about 50% of G.R.O.S.S. total score.
Now I represent a mere 15%, demonstrating how far we have
come as a team!

Well put Staffa. Well put.

Perhaps TJL, you haven't quite found the right empire. Over here we let you play how you want and how often you want. You'll never feel pressure to play or submit from us. OUr forum is here, not off site alone so you can interact with everyone else all the time. Your fun is primary, Your score is secondary. We know each score helps. And you'll score longer and more in the long run if you play how you like to and have fun. As you can see from the front page, our players have gotten there from vastly different styles, skill levels and type boards. So come on over to the family. Your Pirate Family. And we've even got a paper pirate hat for ya. Courtesy of Calvin and Hobbes. HEHE.

We don't respond to threads. We're pirates. We hijack them. HEHE.

"I used to be unaligned - I joined the MWC pretty much on a whim; I had enough points to nudge them into 1st, so I did."

Hey TJL1,

If you enjoy nudging, why don't you join the Fellowship now and nudge us into first? :D

Seriously, empiring is not just about the rankings. Find yourself an empire to suit what you are looking for. Whether it is discussing strategy, role-playing/story writing or any other stuff that suits your fancy.

As an operator of an approved franchise, I can tell you this straight from the manual: you can be GROSS, or you can be GROSS roadkill! ;)
Gosh, Ray, but GROSS just offered me a paper pirate hat not to. :)

But you do make a good point - there is more to the meta-game than just climbing the charts, just as there is more to the game than just climbing the charts.

Oh yeah. You get a free Rapier, Cutlass, or Sabre too. And only we have the Survey ship of doom, and Threadzilla. And we try to keep our stories Space Oriented. After all, this is a space game.

But join or stay where you are based on what you feel comfy with matey.

I'd say the squirrels would probably disagree...

Whether or not you want to join an empire, the empire threads can be fun. There's good strategy discussion and good role-playing and if you like either one you can probably find an empire to your taste. Take a look!
