Know of any good hard drive recovery software?

My wife's hard drive crashed and I'm looking for a good recovery program. Anyone have any good or bad experiences? Thanks!

I've heard many great things about SpinRite. It's supposed to be the cat's meow. Look at the video linked on the main page.

BartPE. Used it. It provides a Windows-Like interface, and allows you to plug in portable hardware, and free. You can use the file browser to browse your entire hard drive and external drives. It can recover anything you choose to your portable drive and transfer to another computer so you can reformat.

Tried Spinrite. Didn't work. I think the drive is too far gone. Can only recognize 10MB of 80GB.
Hope I can get a refund. $89.00.
I'm not sure about BartPE. I don't want to install an os, just recover data from it.

Have a look at http://www.ubcd4win.com/

It utilises BartPE and you end up with a bootable CD (much like BartPE) but it has a load of included utilities that you can use to diagnose & recover disks etc. It can even be setup to access the 'net so you can download drivers etc.

I've used it for recovering registry hives etc very successfully.

I am running GetDataBack right now. Looks promising.

I can see a lot of file names, but everything looks like gibberish.

It's just a bootable CD. D/l PE Builder, put an XP cd into the drive, and it will build BartPE into a folder, and then burn it to a CD. Not installing an OS.

RyanBanks, this thread is from 2005. Unlikely the folks are still having the problem.
