IP update broke .exe's AGAIN part 2

I was really excited when the IP update just prior to 3.0 didn't mess anything up. Oh well...

I'm using the Mako IP pack. When I updated to 3.0 I rebooted. All the .exe files were showing the Mako default icon. I rebuilt the cache and repaired icon images...no good. I click on restore system defaults and now the .exe files are the Windows default icon.

The only way to fix this situation is to totally uninstall IP, reboot, run a reg cleaner, reboot, reinstall IP, choose my desired icon pack, reboot and everything is fine.

I really don't understand why I have to go through this most of the time when I update IP. Am I supposed to restore the default icons before I update? What is the solution? I've commented on this phenomenon before, but no workable answers have been forthcoming.

Am I the only one having this problem? If so then there's something wrong with something somewhere I need to fix. Any suggestions? I've tried everything I can think of. Well, here's a twist: Set icons back to default, rebuilt cache, repaired icon images, set to default, all that jazz. Uninstalled IP, deleted the folder, ran 2 different reg cleaners, rebooted, ran the reg cleaners again, rebooted. I can't get my .exe files to show their native icons!! ;p This bites, to put it mildly

I have downloaded like 3 big IP updates in the last couple of days. I am on dial-up and it's getting annoying.

Yes, I updated yesterday and am having the same problem. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon.

Which is ironic, since I just got done with a new icon pack and can't see if it's working right to upload.

~I havent done the latest update but the previous one wasnt working for me either. I just havent bothered downloading any icon packages cos I cant seem to get them to apply. I'll just wait...
Im on dial up also and these updates are time consuming...especially when you have to uninstall/reinstall more than once.

Hah, I thought it was only me... Since I update IP won't even run.. It comes up and I get the little flashlight searching for packages and then it just closes. No errors, no messages nothing... Oh well, I'll try to get a copy that works from OD since I don't usually mess with making backups.

werewolf, I have never had the exe problem, so this is a guess.

Go to HKEY_Classes_Root\.exe and check if the default is "exefile".
The go to HKEY_Classes_Root\exefile\DefaultIcon and check if it says "%1"

If both of these items are correct, I would then search the backup.ini in the IconPackager directory for a setting for exefile. If you find one, delete it.

If you have .exe listed in your custom file types, delete it.

It said the update was 10.66mb on mine, though I was surprised at how large it was didn't matter on dsl. The update works just fine here.

I know this has been mentioned many, many times....... but it sure would be nice if SDC offered alternative updates WITHOUT any extras. Not only would it be faster for us on dialup, but I (and I'm sure I'm not alone) wouldn't have to delete a bunch of stuff I don't want, over, and over, and over......

That's a really good point, Koasati, there are usually tons of things I don't want or already have...the option to just update the program would be nice. I'm on dsl, the time to download is no big thing, but it takes longer to delete icon packages and windowblind skins than installing the update.

Developer bagginz, I can if you still think it will help but the 3.00.089 build seems to have cleared the problem up. However, if you do need it does Stardock have a public FTP server I can put the file on. I'm not sure I can e-mail a several hundred MB file. I have lots of IP packages and I can only imagine how big that directory is.

Brian Harper suggested the following which is what fixed it for me: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\IconHandler (if this key exists, DELETE it).
