is there anyplace that has a step by step walkthru to get going? Can the colony ships be used more than one time? When do you click the turn button, on the research buttons does it just keep on going down the list by itself?

No you can't

When do you click the turn button

No, it will not (at least not directly). Normally when you finish one tech, you would be asked to chose the next to work on. It is not wise to allow the computer to pick the techs for reaserch

For strategys, as walktrus see the strategy Forum, you may find answers on many question there

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, we'll all gladfully help youwith your problems

I don't know what I am doing wrong I tried folowing some of the ways to colonize, but I am in debt in no time, the newly colonized planets say the have no resources. Do you set the individual tax rate for each planet, or is it just the same for all of the planets.

You set the tax rate for the empire as a whole, in the Domestic Policy screen. You also manage your spending and so on from here, to keep yourself out of debt.

Be sure the planets you colonize have a Planet Quality (PQ) of 15 or better. As you get more familiar with the game, you may learn how to make good with PQ 14 class planets (or even as low as 13!). :)

I remember the mistake i made in the begining was to rush-buy colony ships. Don't just adjust your military spending slider to 100% and you should be a able to produce one every 2nd or 3rd turn.

This is from the Senate Halls forum. I has helped me (another newb) in my first game:

These are just few rules for the beginner players. Many of these ideas were created by strategist EBZero.

1-Start with a good planet PQ19 or higher (PQ= Planet Quality), when you start the game you click in your homeworld planet and you will know what PQ has. (if the PQ is too low hit Ctrl-N until you get a good starting position).
2- Star with map size tiny or small.
3- Try to get a good position in the map, I prefer center or close to the center of the map that way your exploration vessel can reach each corner of the map.
4-Check all the victory conditions until you are familiar with the game.
5-Colonization Rush, set your taxes to 50%, research 0%, social production 0% and military production 100%, also set your expenses to 100%
6-Try to colonize as many system as you can, 3-7 will be good.
7-Send your exploration vessel to every corner of the map trying to make contact with each AI's race.
8-Change your military production to 0% and your research to 100%.
9-Research the basic techs that you will need to build your social-production-military structure, such as:

*Communication Theory
*Universal Translator
*Diplomacy
*Propulsion Theory
*Cold Fusion
*Medical Theory
*Basic Environment Control
*Zero Gravity Research
*Industrial Theory
*Interstellar refining
*Nano-metal composition

10-Set research to 0% and social production to 100%, and began to build the following structures:

-Soil enhancement
-Habitat Improvement
-Manufacturing Center
-Fusion Power Plant
-Banking Center
-Research Lab.

(Quick note, if your funds start getting real low, trade techs with the AI's, I prefer in the beginning to trade only with the Minor races, get as much money as you can in the largest period of time, such as 100bc per 50 months)

Another quick note:
Use the planet with the highest PQ after it has finish building the Fusion Power Plant to build on it all your Wonders and Capitals, so as first step build on it your Manufacturing Capital and then proceed after that to build Diplomatic Translators, Tri-Strontium Steel, Aphrodisiac and Frictionless Clothing.

After you have built the last Wonder, switch back the Social Production to 0% and Research to 100% and then research

*Trade
*Advanced Trade

Switch them back again and build Economic Capital and Galactic Stock Exchange (remember use your highest PQ planet for these constructions, 99% of the time is going to be your homeworld)

As soon as Galactic Stoc Exchange is built switch then again and research Interstellar Business and Cultural Trade.

Switch again and build Ultra Spices and Galactic Exhibition.

After these are built switch and research the following techs:

*Interstellar Marketing
*Interstellar Capitalism
*Xeno Propaganda
*Artificial Gravity
*Controlled Gravity

Switch again and build

-Restautant of Eternity
-Propaganda Machine
-Gravity Accelerators.

These are just basic steps, you can alter some of them, omit some of them or add new ones, this walkthrugh works only for lowqer levels and small planets, if you wish to apply this strategy to bigger maps or tougher levels you must improve it.

Hope it helps.

Some of the veterans played a succession game where players pass the game from person to person. Although it's at a high difficulty level, they describe the game in really good detail. You should get an idea of how the game works from here. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72311

A bit more punctuation might have made this clearer. I think this was meant to say:
Don't! Just adjust your military spending slider to 100% and you should be a able to produce one every 2nd or 3rd turn.
