Active desktop settings and ObjectDesktop ?

i was wondering if active desktop in xp needs to be on for OD to work, i want to restrict seeing all picture from the "my pictures" folder in display properties/desktop when selecting a wallpaper, does anyone know how to do this, someone suggested it was to turn off active desktop, and i wanted to know how that would affect OD and themes.
