Firefox Skins?

Firefox Skins?

Where are they

Brad put out a feeler question about what new categories we would like to have here at WC. One of the biggest requests was that we get a section for FireFox skins. Apparently Deviant Art is overflowing with them, and I know that Brad took a look at DA and agreed we should have one.

Where are the skins? We have a category that has remained at "0" skins since the day it was opened. Do those skins take longer to make than others, or are people just going to DA out of habit and selection, or is there really not a need?

Just curious, after so many people requested it, why there are not skins. Is anyone working on one?

I guess I should re-word, I wish it was either more simple to edit or someone would say exactly what you need to do in plain english. Step by step instructions or something, hell maybe "skinning firefox for dummies", I only understand 5 languages; English, HTML, Lingo, ActionScript, and " 1337 ]-[ /-\ >< 0 |2 " so all this other stuff is just jargon for the rest of us >_<

I think that the difficulty of skinning firefox is why it is taking so long for them to appear. I hope that is why. I just noticed the FireFox section myself, for what it's worth. Was there a front page announcement about the added section? Maybe the right people just haven't noticed/been notified that it's here?

Yea, there was a annoucement for it.

And for skinning Thunderbird and Firefox. By what I was looking at while searching on how to skin Firefox. They are not much diffrent. I don't use Thunderbird so I can't check to make sure of that.

Wicked, thanks I love, it! I can't ever get too many Firefox skins, and was sad to see that only one has made it here after all the requests. Though I just happen to have loads of them I haven't even used yet so I can wait to get more...

I to, am trying to learn to skin Firefox,(thanks to David Lanham for allowing the port of Somatic to Firefox) and find that it's much like everyone else says, there are just loads of things to change...and huge amount of images...so wish me luck, please.

Oh, and I would honestly not object one bit to getting Thunderbird skins on here too! There aren't enough of them either, but I think that's only a matter of time, because once someone tries it they get hooked...or at least I did...heck I tried it because it had a built in Spell Checker, but the junk mail controls are really great too.

You guys may want to actualy consider changing the catagory from Firefox to Mozilla, and then have sub-catagories for both Thunderbird and Firefox...Just a thought, but it may help fill the gallery up a little...

I would be almost done with mine but several things have slowed me down. Everything seems to be happening at once, but I guess that's life. I may work on it a little at school today. All I got to say is it's FREEZING!!!! I'm in Altoona, PA if you wonder where I am.

WickedP,

Hey, I need a little nudge on this. I've started it and It's getting there. I however am stuck on trying to change the background color or add a image to the whole browser? I disabled windowsblinds because it seems to take over it. I took apart your skin and you used the layout alot of people seem to be using. I'm using the classic style for my first on then go from there. But which .css file deals with the color for the browser? I can't seem to find the right one or I did look at it and didn't look close enough.

you know it's funny how often i thought "why isn't this skin working" but then i started noticing little fine print of things like "you must have windowblinds for this to be fully skinned" dunno if thats just the way some people made theirs or not.

Just wanted to say that I'm getting there. I finally made it past that hump with the background. I would of figured it out sooner but I haven't had much time to sit down and work on it. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like so far. It has work left to be done to it. I'm not sure how much I can get done though before the end of this month. I'm going to at least try to have it done.

Edit:

I forgot to add that the background is just a temp for trial. I'm going to be making changes to it but it will looks something around that.

Guys this is my honest opinion. I do not think Firefox has to be totally skinned. Having the icons skinned is enough in my opinion. The OS takes care of the rest. If you have windowblinds then its even better.

this is what I get so far from limited playing around with the thing, does anybody see something different?

Joe,

You've got it right...the only thing I'm doing in addition to the toolbar icons, are the buttons, radio buttons, and checkboxes. I also tweak the tabbar to match the color schemes.

I dont think it needs to be totally skinned either. Heck, I dont WANT it totally skinned....I'd prefer that WB handle the tabs and stuff.

Well, this is mine without windowblinds loaded. It's suppose to go with my ObjectDock skin "Alien Chrome". I still got several icons left to make. I'm trying to be creative on some so they don't match other people's icons and it goes with the alien theme. It's getting closer though.

I am doing a Firefox skin to go with a wb skin I am working on...wb seems to skin the buttons, radio buttons and checkboxes?

I am basically skinning any icons I can find, that little red close button, a couple of mouseover colours which were out of place, dropdown menu arrows - that type of thing. The skin is basically an extension of the wb skin and intended to be used in conjunction with it so it seems pointless to skin elements that the wb will.

Well, I finished Version one of my skin. I uploaded it and now to see if it makes it.

I tried skinning it for about a week, finding too many of the same things it seemed, and other things, like the background, top back, not the bottom back, or sub window back....... I couldn't find at all. And after a bit I looked at it, said this isn't anything special/original anyway, and trashed it. I'll just wait till I can get some help from someone I guess. But I don't use window blinds so I'd mucho prefer to have the browser skinned, but all in all, as me not using WB is a minority around here...maybe make 2 versions of a skin when it's called for, one that works with WB one that runs without?

What I ended up doing is messing with the stylesheets till I figured out what did what. Like I used a bright orange color to find what tags went with what area of the browser. From there, I just kept adding and I got it to a likable skin. I will make improvements on and off depending on the time I have. Like I want to change the throbber, change more of the icons, try to skin the bottom of the browser (had alot of problems here), and some other stuff I find. I forget how long I've been working on mine. I know it's been many hours to get where I am now. But since I know what some of the things are, when I get this fully done to where I can't do anymore to it, then I shouldn't have problems with designing another one.

Now this sucks. It crashes the browser if you try to install my skin. I don't know how to delete what I submitted. I thought I had it but it's not there till I started to mess with things and I don't know what is wrong.

Weaksid,

Make a post here http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=18 they've been skinning FF for much longer than we have.

Good luck!

Thanks, I posted a new topic since I couldn't find the answer in any of the threads. I have school here soon so hopefully I can get on the internet there and see if anybody can help me.

I have the file fixed but someone said there was still a problem. Can anyone here check it out and let me know what they found? I worked on it in class for several hours and got it working. I was able to drag it over to my theme menu and it installed and stayed without any errors. I uninstalled and reinstalled it several times to make sure.

Thanks.

Weaksid...

When I install it I get the default FF icon, and only the Tabs are skinned. Question: Did you get a GUID from irc.mozilla.org?
