United Planets Crashes

I've seen several threads, but none address my issue. The United Planets screen crashes EVERY second time I play. I opened debug.err and noticed something strange. I'm consistently getting this error: "ASSERT ERROR in file G:\PROJECTS\pear\SOURCE\MWIN.CPP at line 397." Drive G: is a virtual drive used by Alcohol, a virtual drive mounting program. I'm assuming the developers might have a G drive and that it's looking for something there. I'll change the virtual drive letter and post if it fixes it.

T1Pimp:  It's not actually looking for a g drive on your system. That's just the path from the machine that was compiled.

Please install SmartException from the FreeStuff tab in Stardock Central.  It will pop up a dialog if it is running when Gal Civ crashes.  Click Submit, then Open Log Directory.  This should open the folder containing the file Galciv.exe.cra (if not, the file should be in the folder where SmartException was installed).  Then you can send the file to me at cbegle@stardock.com along with your debug.err file from the galciv directory.

Hate to stirr old things up, but bought it yesterday and have the same issue. "Search" told me it was due to a certain event file that came with a mod, but I dont run that mod, its straight from the box. I updated to 1.12.079 through Stardock and got me the SmatException program, and it pops up after the crash, but I cannot find the log-file anywhere, not in the Stardock-dir, not in its own folder, nowhere. So, whats next? I'd really like to run this beautiful game a little bit longer then, well, 7 to 8 minutes. Its sort of Alpha Centauri in space, and I loved AP.
edit:oops, found the log file, sending it.

I think that this problem was due to one of the UP bink files missing a few bytes at the end of the file; ie, it hadn't unpacked correctly.

Download the free rad game tools here: http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

Even if the files themselves are ok, if there's another program on your system like Quicktime or WinDVD that tried to take the file associations (which is another cause for crashes) then this will take care of that problem.

Install them, and then go into your gfx folder.  There are 5 files that I need you to check:

UPRace01_00.bik 3,633 kb
UPRace02_00.bik 6,750 kb
UPRace03_00.bik 3,824 kb
UPRace04_00.bik 3,033 kb
UPRace05_00.bik 6,656 kb

Double clicking on the files will run them in the bink viewer. If you watch them through to the end, they should show the bink logo.  The one that doesn't is corrupt.

Then just tell me which one it is, and I'll e-mail you a good copy, or a link if your isp won't accept them.
