Is there a way to get the update un-zipped? I cannot unzip it.

If you get it from stardock it's not zipped and is installed automatically.

The stardock sight seems to only allow buying the s/w (I already own the CD.) For updates it points right back to the GALCiv site.

Geoffrey is talking about installing the Stardock Central client in the downloads section. It can handle the updates without a need to unzip the files.
