Start11 taskbar icon mismatch and multiple app launches on Windows Canary 29570

Hello Stardock Support,

I would like to report what appears to be an incompatibility involving Start11 on Windows Insider Canary Build 29570.

After installing Build 29570, I encountered a serious taskbar issue when Start11 was enabled:

  • Taskbar icons became mismatched (for example, hovering over the Microsoft Edge icon showed “Outlook (new)”, and File Explorer showed “Calculator”).
  • Clicking certain taskbar icons could launch two applications simultaneously, or open the wrong application.
  • The issue seemed limited to the taskbar, as launching the same applications from the Start menu worked normally.

After troubleshooting, I disabled Start11 features and returned to the native Windows taskbar. Once Start11 was disabled, the problem disappeared completely, which strongly suggests a compatibility issue between Start11 and this Canary build’s taskbar implementation.

I have noticed there has been a recent Start11 update, and I wanted to report this in case it helps identify or improve compatibility with Build 29570 (or similar Insider builds).

System details:

  • Windows 11 Insider Canary Build 29570
  • Start11 (latest available version at the time of testing)
  • Issue affects taskbar icon mapping / pinned applications behavior

I would be happy to provide additional details or help test a fix if useful.

Thank you for your work and for looking into this.

Disabling Start11 immediately resolves the issue.

Best regards, Cyrille Plassard

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. First, do know that Stardock does not support its product on Windows Insider/Beta build. That said, the issue is known on older version and I believe recently resolved. Please try Start11 v2.7 which released few hours ago. Refer here: https://forums.stardock.com/541381. Please download and install this version, reboot immediately after the installation is done. Retest the issue and report back.

Thank you,
Basj,

Hello Basj,

Thank you very much for your reply and for looking into this.

I have already installed Start11 v2.7 and rebooted after installation as suggested, but unfortunately the issue still persists on my system under Windows Insider Canary Build 29570.

The behavior remains the same when Start11 taskbar features are enabled:

  • taskbar icons can still be mismatched (wrong tooltip labels),

  • clicking certain pinned icons may open the wrong application or trigger multiple applications.

As before, disabling Start11 and reverting to the native Windows taskbar immediately resolves the issue completely.

This seems to suggest the issue may not be fully resolved, at least on Build 29570 in my configuration.

I wanted to report back as requested, since this may help further investigate whether an edge case remains.

Please let me know if there is any additional information, screenshots, or testing I can provide.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Best regards,
Cyrille Plassard

Thanks for the report, we have reproduced this and are just putting the finishing touches on a small tweak.

Hopefully we can put that out in beta either tomorrow or early next week for you.

Hello Neil,

I hope you are doing well.

I’m following up regarding the Start11 issue on Windows Insider Canary Build 29570 that you kindly confirmed had been reproduced, and for which you mentioned a beta tweak might be available the next day or early the following week.

I just wanted to ask whether there has been any progress on that fix, or if a beta build including the tweak is available for testing.

I appreciate your help and I remain happy to test it on my system if useful.

Thank you again for your time and support.

Best regards,
Cyrille.

Without beginning a new thread, I wish to note that I am experiencing the same behavior as described above.
Also on the canary Win11 build and 2.7.  Thank you.

Hello,

I am opening a new ticket because my previous post was automatically closed after a long period without any reply.

I am currently running Windows 11 Insider Preview build 29580.1000 with Start11 2.7.

The issue I previously reported is still present: taskbar labels can become incorrect, and in some cases clicking one pinned icon may trigger another application or even launch two applications at once. The issue disappears when Start11 taskbar-related options are disabled and the native Windows taskbar is used.

This behavior was already present on earlier Insider builds, including build 29570.

Could you please confirm whether this is still being investigated, and whether Neil or the development team has any update regarding compatibility with recent Insider/Canary/Experimental builds?

Thank you.

End of Yanouskine's quote

We put out an update for this last week.  2.71 beta.

Please be aware that we do not officially support insider builds of Windows however.
