Drag and drop context menu

I am evaluating Fences.

OS = Windows 11 pro, version 24H2, build 26100.6899

Fences version 6.02

When I use the right mouse button to drag between folder portals the context menu that is offered when I drop my selection fences doesn't offer me the option to copy the selection, which it does if I am dragging between "unfenced" folders.

The Windows default drag-and-drop option between folders on different physical devices is "copy", whereas with fences the default is "move".

I don't think this is right.

Cheers

Phil

Hello again,

I’ve confirmed that the current behavior is set to “move” by design. If you prefer to copy instead, you can hold down Ctrl while clicking and dragging.

Please know that your post was discussed internally, and alternative options will be considered for future updates.

We truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Thank you,

Thank you.  I think the issue should be looked at because it changes the underlying windows behaviour.

Without Fences the default drop action is "move" when dragging between folders on the same physical device, and "copy" when dragging between folders of different physical devices (at least, as determined by "drive letter").

With Fences, the default is always move regardless of physical device.

Pressing the Ctrl key reverses the default with or without Fences.  If it is a design choice to change the normal windows behaviour, I think that's wrong, but it is what it is.  As we said of IBM in times past, "broken as designed".:|

However, I think the following is a bug:'( :

Using the right mouse button to drag, a context menu is shown when you release the mouse button allowing you to choose what action to take.  When using Fences, only the default action is shown (namely "move"), however when the ctrl key is pressed the context menu correctly shows both "move" and "copy" options correctly, with the reversed default action highlighted.

Yes, thank you for raising re right mouse button! Raised this to the team and they found it quickly. It'll be resolved for next release, which will come out early Dec.

Yes sorry about the default action. It's ultimately a design choice. While copy is technically correct, and while some people might set things up explicitly wanting this, the desktop surface lends itself to moving rather than copying as both panes are persistently visible. The current way tends to work well for people and we've received few to no complaints over the years. But the right mouse drag, definitely a bug so the team fixed. Thank you!
