What does anyone here think about WinAmp?

I just visited the site and wondered into the plug-in area and realized just how far WinAmp has come.

Does anyone plan on making a WinAmp player with a plug-in to go with it for the GUI Olympics?

I think winamp is one of the best programs for windows. by far it has more features in my opinion than any other music player. While I don't consider it the best video player, for music none is better.

I use Winamp exclusively. I am making a skin. For the most part I really don't use plugins. I know there are some useful ones out there, though.

I hate the playlist/media library for WMP. I hate, HATE the idea of a player cataloging my media. I shuffle drives around, re-title media, etc., and it is just a pain in the butt to have to deal with some kind of permanent database. Simple playlists are fine for me. Maybe you can bypass all that with WMP, but it was never really worth the time to try.

I think all the "media Library" junk in WMP is an extension of Microsoft's DRM philosophy. I can't imagine what we are in for in coming years.

I think Winamp 2.81 is very good and not a big factory for music and if i had to change (to get video and so on functions) i surelly go to WMP and not to Winamp 5

I've been using WA for years, and I dont think I'll be using any other media player any time soon. Winamp really rocks. [I'm stili using Winamp 2X tho' ]
However I do use WMP for video files.

I'll have a Winamp Plugin and buttons for my GUI Olympics WB skin. Just finishing it up now.

I never tried to use the media Library... on the older version I remember having a play list and changing the name of the file didn't make a difference. Now moving the file was a whoe nother story

I use winamp 5 and notice no to little difference from winamp 2.x.

Just disable all the stupid plugins. and if you feel like it you can use a fancy skin, but I normally don't.

Normally I use xmms. That is in linux, but it is basically a winamp 2.x clone.

I guess I misunderstood your question. I'm making a WB skin not a winamp skin.

what do I think of winamp?

Put it this way...Winamp will never find it's way on to my computer.

I use both Winamp 5 and WMP9, and I like both, although there are features in each that I wish the other had.

Like Baker, I truly have come to hate WMP's Media Library because it is so much work to keep it from automatically sorting and cataloguing my music according to the way some programmer thinks it should be. Unlike Baker though, I do like having a database for my music, and wish WMP's playlist/library was more flexible and configurable to my taste, and that Winamp's playlist had more depth for cataloguing, searching and sorting.

I do have skins started for both Winamp and WMP to go with my WB skin, but I am not ready to enter something like the GUIO's. All of these will be my first submissions to WC and that is a high enough bar for me to focus on right now.

I prefer WMP overall, but like others have said, I find its media-library-system really annoying and will sometimes use WA instead...

The main reason why I mentioned WinAmp was because of the plug-ins I saw on the site. I realized that you could 'technically' skin the player and skin a 'plug-in'. Right now I am using a plug-in that plays the visual AVS on my background of my screen. Now if the AVS matched the whole theme then that's would be really cool

Another plug-in is a game. So if you has a skin that was based off of PAC-man, now you can also play a game too.

(This is also why I think Desktop X is so special, but anyway back to WinAmp)

Another, another plug-in has speakers on the side moving to the beat.

I just think its cool and another way to customize what you see o the screen.

I've been using WA for years. I'll use WMP occaisonally, but it's such a pain to lock everything down, so it doesn't take over.

Trying to muddle my way through a WA modern skin right now. I'm not sure if it will be done in time for GUIO, though.

I like winamp because it works with sysmetrix and windowblinds. Which are probably my favorite programs.

My favorite media player is still Musicmatch because of its great library functions. Second is probably WMP because of all the great skins by TSF.

I never use WMP9. Winamp is my main media player besides JetAudio for cd-ripping. No need for MusicMatch anymore because Winamp 5 has a nice Media-library built in. But I can't recommend Winamp 5 Pro, because the ripping function is really too slow.

I use Winamp 5.02 Pro, I have found no problems using it, I use it to Play MP3's - Play, Rip and Burn CD's, it's by far the best they have ever made

I dunno about all the nuances and functions, but I've been using WinAmp for years, and find it the most uncomplicated for just simple playing of mp3's, of which I have ....er.... lots. Just load up a folder, and it will play the folder. Toggle shuffling, and it shuffles. I used to use it for saving mp3's to .wav format to burn to CD's, but now that DVD players can read mp3's, I don't bother anymore.

I've tried QDC and WMP and iTunes. Never really gave them a total workout, because I am so comfortable with WA, I always just go back that. I've never tried Sonique.

I do have a question though. Which player do you think uses the most computer resources? I think that usability comes down to that when I've got my sorry old puter loaded up with Photoshop, Irfanview, and a media player. I do find, however, that once I load up some music into WA, then minimize it, my computer runs better. Then, I just operate it via Sysmetrix until I need to load up some more tunes.

i was useing excluseively sonique media player ... til its development came to all but a screeching halt....in my opinion it Was the better player. ..but it hasent really had much going on in the last,,, what 4 years ? as a person addicted to newer and better skins, i was forced to find a new mediaplayer (basically people stopped skinning sonique and developing plugins)....IMO some of the skins for sonique are still some of the best looking media player skins out there..

WMP is to nosey and intrusive. while they seem to be trying to make it more user friendly they have actually made it harder to configure. thus harder to use.

winamp was the only choice left. while winamp has grown on me and is a nice player. the amount of free form skins is limited.

I generally keep a player hidden while its running and Winamp has done the job the best. I find WMP and MMJB to be more resource hungry. However I use MMJB for ripping since I like how it does that better than others I have tried.
I especially like the feature in the modern skin for WA5 that shows a notification of which song is playing when a new one starts. WMP can do that, but seems only when its in the taskbar. For those who are scared of trying WA5 and stick with 2.x . Sure 2.x works just fine, but WA5 has a few added features that make it worthwhile, plus the ability to use free form skins if you are into that. It works as well as 2.x, none of the clumsyness of 3.
I have tried a few plugins here and there for WA, and they can be useful. Overall though I don't have a need for them.

I can't enjoy using winamp. Yes it is nice but after you have created 1 skin for it, you will hate it, believe me.
It is working with layers, maki, java, xml and all that kind of stuff. Coding it really isn't fun.
There will be a winamp skin from styl-x for the GUI olympics thought. I am going for the xbox

thanks for scaring me away styl. i was thinkin of using winamp but now... im not so sure...

using it is ok, just a little bit.... well, I am not sure how to name it but I don't have a good feeling with it when I am using it, I prefer my WMP. On the other hand, with winamp you will never see aliased edges, it supports .png and that really is great.

I feel that way too. Wierd.
