HUGE Bug which prevents Icons from being dragged TAB to TAB

1920 x 1080 resolution screen

I purchased the latest Fences at full price to simply organise my game shortcuts into genres.

It's really buggy and not useable in this state...

I Choose a RPG TAB and try dragging Lost Eidolons shortcut, or any of these shortcuts into a different tab... it automatically grabs the last shortcut from the Music / Rhythm TAB... no matter what im dragging and places it wherever i let go of the mouse hold.

Therefore, even if I'm trying to put Lost Eidolons into a different folder, Spin Rhythm Shortcut will just MOVE into this tab instead. This makes managing and organising Tabs completely unusable / broken.

Really hope you can solve this issue, or there was no point in me upgrading from Fences 2 and I may as well revert back to that since it's more stable for me.

Some other info -

  • Windows 11 Home
  • Have tried different resolutions to no success

This bug happens from ALL Fences with TABS. You just cannot drag drop shortcuts from TAB to TAB without problems.

I'm curious if Stardock has tested it's software with many tabs on screen?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I tested on 7 tabs and have no issue moving the shortcut between tabs. Need more information.

  1. Windows 11 full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe to get these numbers.
  2. Fences 6 full version number.
  3. How many tabs you have on?

First, please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Thank you,

1. Here is the Windows version:

 Windows 11 Home OS Build Vers 24H2 - 26100.4061

2. Fences version Number:

3. Here you can see how many tabs I'm using.

There are multiple fences with relative genre tabs.

This is a High end Gaming laptop GE76 Raider Deluxe Edition.

Reinstalling won't really help as I've only just purchased this from you last week.

Nothing else is installed which would conflict with it.

Thankyou

Please do as the Community Support Assistant requested. It could be that the installation was less than ideal.

I only purchased this app so i could use it's TABS functionality within Fences (Because Fences 2 does pretty much everything else Fences 6 does). I will create you a video recording with explanation of all the problems I have encountered with Fences 6 so far, be right back.

Thank you for the video, I see you are using Windows solid color as a background, yes? Just as a test, try using picture wallpaper as a background and see if the issue appear while using it.

Other than the BG using a picture, nothing changes with the TABS. They are literally, completely unusable in this state.

I will try to uninstall, search all relative files to Fences and reinstall again fresh next.

Before I do that - I wanted to make some more tests to see if it's always just the TABS and have found a discovery for you!

I created 2 new fences, dropped 1 onto the other, added a load of shortcuts to both, and scrolled mouse over these icons. They were behaving as expected and therefore this issue is exclusively relative to having lots of TABS!

I will see how many i can make before the problem starts...

2 TABS - All is normal

3 TABS - Still fine

4 TABS - Problems started again...

- Sometimes simply dragging a selection box will drag a shortcut again from a totally different TAB into that TAB

- Dragging the top left 1st Shortcut will nearly always drag a shortcut from a different TAB into this TAB

- Dragging selections becomes Delayed and choppy / unresponsive

- Mousing over Icons, only highlights SOME of them in that TAB, but not all.

TABS are Definitely in a Broken state.

I am losing a lot of hours from my work trying to find a resolution to your software, and paid a really high price for something that should only organise desktop icons. This is in a really broken state, so please can we work out a resolution here, because applications shouldn't be sold in this state. Thankyou

Another clue for you, is that this happens when a TAB has more than 20 Shortcuts inside it

More problems...

After spending ages re-organising all my files into folders again, I went through removing each fence, only to find a fence stuck at the top of the screen which could be resized, but not moved

So I purged Fences, made sure it's fully removed / uninstalled.

Downloaded directly from the product link and noticed this has an extra _sd in the Setup File naming?

Trying everything from scratch again now, using this file.

After Fresh Re-installation - as expected all problems are exactly the same.

After Re-installation

Another bug?

Changing the colour of fences, changes the colour of all the shortcut icons inside them too?

Try looking at this setting.

For you first issue, I have forwarded your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

Thanks, yes I found that Setting and the Icon colour change is just a check box, nothing to do with the TAB bugs.

So I've gone through and now tested in every resolution up to 4k

Always the same problems. Wasted hours on this, but it's 100% re-creatable every time, despite re-installs, purges, checking all drivers are recent.

Here is a video to show how dragging random selection boxes inside a TAB will Drag Icons from other TABS into it and again how some icons highlight with mouse over, and others don't.

Please get back to me ASAP - and if you cannot fix these persistent issues, then I would like a full refund as the application does not work how it should please.

Some extra issues with current version:

When Dragging icons from Portals to TABS, they sometimes fall out and land on the desktop. You can drag them from desktop to TAB after, but not directly from Portals to TABS.

(I'm still suspicious if your application is considering such resolutions with combinations of things like Windows Icon sizes for example? When you hold Ctrl and middle mouse roll, you manually change the size of icons. Would that have anything to do with all these problems?)

I've tried to give you as many possibilities when trouble shooting as possible

Kind Regards.

Hi dudechester,

Some progress on the "icons switch tabs" issue; we have a candidate build available for testing, if you'd like to give a shot.

We'll have a full installer ready next week, but in the meantime a patcher is ready for trying out (v6.01 will be displayed in the about box) that delivers the same results at https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/byk625la4u0jqloxc1dz4/UpdatePatcher_Debug_2025_06_20__10_21_02_pm.exe?rlkey=1ycl9b5vd20fr2zig21iz9sp5&dl=1

Dragging from Portals to Tabs can be interesting as Explorer has do some things after the fact to move the icon, but this is something we should look at, thanks for the heads up.

Btw it sounds like it works when you drag to the body of the tabbed fence, but not to the tab itself? Or something else. Does it make a difference if you drag to the currently-selected tab's tab, verses a tab of a non-selected tab?

Thanks for the information

Hello,

Thanks for update.

I won't personally be able to test for some time now, as I'm making software myself ;) and fully booked, but if you make progress in solving the following, please let me know and I'll get around to testing it later next week when I'm free again:

BUG CHECK LIST:

  • SOME Icons in TABS don't highlight with "Mouse-over"
  • Icons switching TABS when dragging selection boxes inside of TABS
  • Selection Boxes lagging when Tabs have over 20 icons each
  • Dragging from PORTAL to TAB BODY (If dragging to the body section shouldn't be allowed, then it should be made clear, however dragging to the Heading of a TAB is a bit tricky when you have more than 5 Tabs in the same Fence)
  • Dragging Icons/Shortcuts from TABS to TABS pulls incorrect Icons from different TABS into current TAB

thankyou

Ha! No worries.

Thanks for pointing out the "some icons don't highlight on mouseover". We're seeing that too and are working on a fix.

The portal drag issue, we'll have to look more into that. Some of that issue we may not be able to work around – Explorer treats certain drag drops as special and doesn't place the icon right away or in a predictable manner which makes "capturing" it (without creating other problems) problematic. We do see that it does work generally, but for some drags it does not. Something we'll look into thank you.

Hi dudechester just checking in to see if you've gotten to take a look. We just released v6.01 beta which includes this, and the link with the patcher above is more or less identical. We think we've solved at least a couple of the issues you've mentioned.

Hi all,

As Dr W noted above, we've recently released a beta version of Fences which addresses this.

We encourage you to let us know what you think.  More details, feedback, and how to get the beta can be found here:
