i worked with an illustrator once who preferred the vector tools in photoshop over illustrator, for drawing. he said they are much harder to use but after you get the hang of the different style, its great for the actual drawing aspect. i suppose he's right. when it comes to needing a bitmap graphic i want to draw the shape in the ease of vector tools then build on it in photoshop. if you get the hang of doing it in one place, you can really make nice things.

If ya can't afford Corel, you could look at http://www.mediachance.com/realdraw/

...I've only used it a bit, but it seems useful.

wombat_1 - yep, you can do that stuff...I wouldn't of course recomend it. All computer systems are after all just glorified databases with various flashy ways of showing off

How do you exactly use these programs?

to use these programs you need to either read the help file/manual that comes with it, or search for tutorials. those will only get you enough into the program so you sorta know what you are doing. After that its experience. the more you use it the better you will get.

also if you use tutorials, don't start making and submitting stuff from them. most of them will not help you get really good with the graphic editor. instead use them as an introduction to the tools they use to make the things.

I never read the manual first. only after I figure things out on my own in case I missed something.
