Quck Access Menu Missing/Delayed Icons & Background color

Hi there,

I've just updated from Start10 to Start11 (v2) v2.11 and I'm running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (OS Build 19045.5131).
I also uninstalled Start10 (and removed the settings) to start fresh (uninstalled Start10, rebooted, removed the Start10 folder from Program Files, installed the latest Start11, Rebooted).

I'm having a couple issues with my Start Menu's Quick Access Shortcuts using the Modern style as detailed below:

1. When using the Quick Access Shortcut feature to display folders (and having the shortcuts display as a menu), the top result of every folder doesn't display the icon until you move down the tree, see the before and after. The 3rd screenshot is to show it happens with all folders for the top shortcut/icon, it doesn't matter what type of shortcut (whether a folder or an application) and it happens everytime you access the menu(s), not just the first time after a reboot etc.

2. Is there any way to change the background color of these menu's (which are currently black)? I've gone through all the color settings/accent color settings both in Start11 and Windows and nothing I seem to try changes this background.

Thanks.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I can not reproduce this issue on my Windows 10 system. Need to know more on your system.

  1. Do you use any other application that change how your Start Menu and/or Taskbar work?
  2. Do you use any other application that change system icons

Thank you.

Hi basj,

No nothing else like that, besides Start11 the only other application I use that changes anything like this is OldNewExplorer (which makes changes to Windows Explorer) I did try uninstalling that and rebooting just in case but the issue still persists with Start11.

To try and explain what I'm seeing a bit further.. when you first open a folder in the list (like the Android one in my screenshot above), Start11 automatically highlights the first entry in the next tree/folder, this is when the icon is not visible.. moving the cursor off of the entry so it's no longer highlighted is what causes the icon to instantly appear, it doesn't have to be moved to the next shortcut/entry in the list, even moving the cursor away from the list completely will have it show up. It doesn't happen at all to any other shortcut but the top ones, I also never saw this issue in all the years I've been using Start10.

Please try this, uninstall Start11, reboot immediately after uninstall finished. Redownload Start11 latest version from you account. Install it. Reboot immediately right after uninstall is done. Retest and report back.

Ok, I gave that another try (I did it after seeing the issue the first time), it solved the issue initally but as I started to configure the Start11 settings it came back.

The setting causing the issue is Start Menu > Configuration > Visual Appearance > Selected item accent colour

The colour I want to use (that causes the issue) is: R76, G94, B117 (screenshot below).
The issue starts straight away and goes away just as quick if you hit the Reset button to change it back to the default colour

It appears that the issue happens for darker colours and not lighter, if I just move the slider on the right, up (making it lighter) at a certain point the issue doesn't happen, too far down (darker) and the issue occurs, I can replicate this behavior with any colour:

Issue occurs:

Issue does NOT occur:

This is what I get when I tried to set something similar to your color of choices. I can't reproduce the issue on my system. Just need to turn Mica effect to Off.

Hmm, the Mica setting doesn't change the behavior for me, either way for me I'm happy to work around the issue using a different colour.
Also I just want to note incase it was missed as I see you're using what appears to be a W11 VM, I'm using Start11 on a Windows 10 machine.

I would also like to note a small bug I've found when right clicking one of the shortcuts on the left hand side of the Start Menu.
To reproduce:

1. Right click a shortcut but do NOT make a selection, instead left click outside of the start menu (e.g. the desktop) to close the Start Menu.

2. Re-open the Start Menu and the shortcut that was right clicked is still highlighted. And it will stay highlighted until reboot or until you right click the shortcut again and either make a selection or left click some where else in the Start Menu.
