From what I understand, there is no subscription for Steam purchase, it should be permanent license for Fences v5.

Sometimes steam has deals on games and software that is not found anywhere else. But at the same time you would be part of a different ecosystem. If you purchase directly from stardock you will have access to beta releases and earlier software updates for Fences 5. So there is a trade off on the deal.

Just as additional information, you just need Steam running for installation and activation process, once that is done, you don't need Steam for Fences to work. Updates will also be done via Steam.
