Multi Monitor Support is not handling switching setups well

"When I plug ina new primary monitor, move my icons to it" doesn't work

I keep all my fences on my primary monitor, and the settings:

are perfect for me.

Except - they don't work. I undock my laptop and then connect it back to the dock. Now, all my fences and icons are on the second monitor and not on the primary. I disconnect the primary, and reconnect it, hoping that would make the icons switch ... and they do ... for about two seconds, and then they switch back to the second monitor.

Is this a known defect, or is there a setting I am misunderstanding

Thanks

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know, which version of Fences you're currently using. Need its full version number please.

Thank you.

Hi Basj

I believe I am using the latest version 5.80 on Windows 10 v. 22H2 OS build: 19045.4717

I am using 3 monitors - all same resolution: 1080p

For user with Fences v5.50 and above, do know that there is new layout engine. It is important for you change your auto-adjustment layout to "Store my Fences positions on a per-screen resolution basis". Please follow the steps mention in this thread: https://forums.stardock.com/528229. There is a "Troubleshooting" guide in there, just follow it. It should resolve your issue. If it not resolve, please report back in that thread for Support help.

Hmm - that seems counter intuitive based on the available setting on the screen.

So, for someone like me who has five different setups:

  • Laptop alone with one screen
  • Laptop with main primary screen and one portable monitor on the side
  • Home Office setup with three 1080p monitors (two on a dock, and the primary directly connected to the laptop HDMI)
  • Office setup with three 1080p monitors (two on the dock, and the primary directly connected to the laptop HDMI)
  • Flex office setup with two 1080p monitors on a dock

Is your suggestion above the best solution? I just don't want to constantly have to manage a configuration based on where I am working that particular day.

If I only have my fences and icons on my primary monitor ... always, then it seems to me that it would be most efficient with the solution you already have in place.

Looking forward to your feedback

Thanks

Hi pingel, please adjust your settings to:

This will ensure your layout is remembered uniquely on each of these setups, and also icons on your primary screen will follow to the next configuration's primary screen.

Please note that each of the layouts are stored separately – so, once you establish one for one of your 4 monitor setups, that 4 monitor setup will be remembered separately from your 3 monitor setup. (Your changes to the primary on the 3 monitor setup will now "follow" to the 4 monitor setup, which will store it's configuration separately.)

Please let us know how this works for you! Thank you.

Thanks for your speedy response. I have made the changes and been switching between to workstation setups, and now I have no issues. |-)
