Migration from Windows 10 to 11. Is there a way to ...

Hello,

I just received a "new to me computer" (Dell Precision T7920) running Windows 11.  I'm running Multiplicity on my soon to be old computer (Dell Precision T7910) running Windows 10.  Is there a way to migrate my T7910 Multiplicity setup to my new computer?

If yes, how do I do it?  If no, please, consider this a feature request for a future release.

Thank you.

Hello,

On each PC, you can export the registry settings for MP for reimporting on the respective PC.

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\Multiplicity2

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Multiplicity2

'Mutiplicity2' is not a typo, its a carry over that is still used in MP3.

Hello,

Maybe I'm missing something.  I followed your instructions to export and import.  The problem is the import doesn't look like the Win 10 system.  It is basically still empty.  I left and restarted the regedit command.  No change.

Do I need to restart the computer?

For security reasons you cannot copy registry keys from one computer to another for configured machines and at a minimum you would have to reconfigure the connections as the passcodes will all be incorrect.  The information is encrypted to prevent someone copying the saved connection data from the registry.

I appreciate your helping me migrate to my new computer.

Feature Suggestion:  Please consider adding a migration feature to help us move to a new system OR to add a new primary should one own multiple licenses or a copy of PRO (9 pack).

Hello Neil,

As you're saying, the instructions by Sean (Stardock Product Lifecycle Manager) won't work.

Do you have suggestions on how to accomplish this task (migrate the primary from my T7910 (Windows 10 Pro x64) to T7920 (Windows 11 Pro x64))?

Thank you.

They will 'work' in that all the 'settings' will export \ import.  What it apparently will not do is preserve the passcodes for security reasons - which makes sense.

While a settings export is a fine suggestion, the passcodes would still not likely be a part of it (or at least the export would have to be securely verified).

As for your 'or' You can already promote a Secondary to a Primary

However, it would not copy the settings from the original Primary, what I suspect you are asking for.

Hello and thank you for your reply.

The issue isn't the pass codes, I don't mind inputting in them.  I'm saying nothing imported.

I seem to have missed one regkey (perhaps the only one that is required)

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Stardock\Multiplicity2

This would be the order of operations:

  1. You exported the noted registry keys from an existing Primary, creating 3 files
  2. You moved these files to the new PC, the desktop is a fine enough place.
  3. You installed MP on a new PC
  4. You double-clicked each of the registry files on the desktop to digest them on the new PC.
  5. Open the MP UI

This is a video of me doing just that with my host PC (exporting from) and importing into a Windows Sandbox

Hello,

Thank you for your reply, especially the video.  I'll try it this evening.
