Start11 2.08 Release Feedback Thread

With the Start11 v2.08 release, we are creating this thread so that users can report any observed issues.

Obtaining the product

Object Desktop members can get the release from within Object Desktop Manager

Individual purchases (as well as Object Desktop Members) can also be obtained from your account page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

For guest check-out purchase (no account), from this link: http://www.stardock.com/support/productkeyretrieval

Reporting an issue

Please include the following for anything found:

  • Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)

  • Detailed steps to recreate the issue seen

  • Screenshots and videos are very helpful.  Videos can be uploaded to a cloud drive service (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive, YouTube), with a shared link included in your post.  Images can be copied and pasted directly into a post.

  • If there are specific apps that the app does not work (well) with, please note what apps and their exact versions.  If any app is not common, a link to a trial version would be appreciated.

I don't know if this is a bug or is intentional, but when I upgraded from Start11 1.5 to 2.08, I noticed a "Suggested" app at the top of my Windows 10 style Start Menu (above "All apps"). And there doesn't appear to be a way to not show it. This is separate from "Recently installed" apps, which I have disabled via Start Menu options.

My Windows version is Windows 11 Home 24H2 Build 26100.1150.

Also, thank you for "Settings backup" - that's what spurred me to upgrade more than anything.

Oh, thanks. I wonder what "Suggested" means, though. In this case, it was an app I already had installed. So I don't know what is being suggested.

Suggested are apps, folders, and files which have been used recently, based on frequency of use and other criteria.

Hi! Thee app seems to not work since las Windows update on 7/11 (23H2 Win11 x64 (KB5040442) ). Any solution? Thank you!

I am on version 22631.3880 Windows 11 pro and am not experiencing any new issues. What issues are you experiencing on your end?

I checked and it seems that the service was desactivated somehow, set the service in "automatic" again solves the problem. Thanks  for worring!

I'm not sure if this is new to the most recent release or not (though I sort of remember it not being an issue before) but when allowing Start11 to enhance the taskbar and using virtual desktops, the program seems to stop obeying this windows setting:

I'm very used to using taskbar icons to jump back to a program when I may have forgotten what virtual desktop it is on, so this breaks my normal usage pattern and I need to go flicking through desktops instead.
End of lsyoung's quote

Any input on this? It's a bummer not being able to use the enhanced taskbar properly together with virtual desktops. I'm now on the 24H2 release preview and it is broken in the same way.

I had added these suggestions to another post I made thanking y'all for the pinned folder as menu function, but here is the list since this is probably the better place to put them:

It works like a charm, though finding the icons I was using in TLB has been a bit of a challenge. So some suggestions:

  1. It would be helpful to make this pin folder as menu function to allow for graphic file formats such as what Icon Packager accepts. In fact a new Icon Packager the supported this would be even better.
  2. Re-arranging the order of items in the menu would also be very helpful. Such as drag&drop within the menu itself. (If there are other ways to do this let me know, please, someone.)
  3. Is it possible to have a show name options so we can have the icons and the folder name next to each icon? Not the entire path, just the final folder name that was selected for pinning.

(removed one suggestion as I figured out what I was doing to cause the issue.)

Hello! I don’t know where else I can turn... I would like to ask you to add a function from StartAllBack to Start11: setting up the display of explorer icons. Since it is impossible to use these two programs together, and I really want to have this setting in Start11, I kindly ask you to pass this information on to the program developers.

I don't think Start11 have any plan to change the Windows File explorer. However,I have forwarded your request to the Stardock Support Team for their review and recommendations. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We really do appreciate your feedback, Thanks

It’s somehow strange that everything is done in these two programs: half of the functions are in one program, half in the other... Maybe the developer will have the opportunity to add settings from Start11 to StartAllBack?

No, I doubt that. The two programs differ greatly, and frankly, what's Stardock's interest in doing that?

Both programs are aimed primarily at changing the START menu. The difference is in the additional settings. Without any problems it would be possible to make one program with all the functions...

This is your personal point of view. I am more interested in taskbar functions and I prefer Start 11 was of doing things

Ignoring the fact that those programs have different developers and are owned by different entities.

We have seemingly collected all the useful feedback for Start11 v2.08.  Thus this thread will be closed.

If you do have issues with the product still, please create a new thread where we would be happy to assist.

I retested this, and the two programs are still working just fine together. (obviously you can only use either start 11's start menu or startallbacks start menu rather then using both at the same time) Your issue should therefore be solved.

The lead developer of start 11 made the two programs play better together a few months ago.

yes the first time you open the start menu the icons have to load the time is always almost similar only once it happened that it took longer (I haven't measured the actual time to be honest)

I thought about something, could the loading of the icons be affected by the fact that the .png icons are located on a secondary hard disk?

I would like to point out that I have always kept the icons on the second hard disk and I have never had any problems

Or could it be that there are many icons or there are a few more tabs, could this influence this?
End of sciroppo's quote

sciroppo,

It doesn't look like you ever got a definitive answer to your question. You are not alone.

I use the Windows 10 Style Start11 menu. I have over 200 shortcuts, all with custom icons, in 26 tabs, on two pages. If I restart the computer or restart Explorer, It takes a second for all the shortcut icons to load, but after that, they load instantly.

I believe this is normal behavior for Start11. After a restart, Start11 has to refer to the Registry to locate all the icons and load them into the Start menu. Once they are all cached, Start11 doesn't have to go out and find them again, hence the faster display time.

Just a suggestion, can you add the teskbar to go on the left or right of the screen? just something I liked from windows 10 but they don't have anymore. If you cant add this thats fine but it would be nice to have.

This has been requested many times since Start11 was introduced. I don't believe this will ever be implemented, as Stardock has stated they they will not use old Windows 10 code which has been left behind in Windows 11. Microsoft has also said they will be deprecating this old Windows 10 code in future versions of Windows 11, possibly Windows 24H2 to be released this Fall.
