Can't Connect to Closed-lid laptops

I have laptops set to stay on when the lid is closed; I can connect to the device via KVM but it is unresponsive. Any ideas? As soon as I open the lid I can operate the device. As soon as I close it, I'm stuck.

Is your computer set to go to sleep on lid close?

No - they stay on and I can ping them. In Multiplicity the entire screen is black.
