Fences 4/ Fences 5

upgrade?

I own Fences 4 and have always been able to upgrade free or for a reduced cost. Is this true for Fences 5? If I'm upgrading from Fences 4 do I get a reduced rate? Thank you

Right now Stardock is promoting their brand new SASS version of the Fences brand. What this entails is a yearly subscription fee in order to use Fences with the payout that the service also comes with the next version of Fences (Fences 6) should that version be released while you have an active subscription. This version does come with a discount to people that own Fences 4. Unfortunately the standard version of Fences 5 permanent license is not currently being promoted at all and therefore Stardock is not offering any kind of discount. It currently has a flat rate of 30 dollars.

Here are a few things to keep in mind

1. Fences 5 will be released to steam very soon (in February) and it will be worth seeing if any new promotions take place at that time (It is not a guarantee but may be worth holding out to see)

2. Object Desktop subscriptions may be the better choice going forward if you use a lot of stardock products.

3. Fences 4 is still pretty good software. You do have time to stick with it still as it will not be obsolete any time soon

Thank you for that information. I will say it left me a bit confused, but I think I got the general idea. I'm good with 4. I installed 5 can I revert to 4 by simply uninstalling 5? Or do I have to reinstall 4 after uninstalling trial of 5? I have not noticed a difference between 4 and 5, just a slight one but nothing noteworthy.

Hello,
For more information on Fences 5 upgrade please refer to this thread: https://forums.stardock.com/524050

For the return to Fences 4 part. You will need to uninstall Fences 5 reboot, reinstall Fences 4. Reboot again. Your layout snapshot should still be there. And everything should returned to normal Fences 4 behavior.

Thanks

I think you are making a good choice personally. If you aren't in love with Chameleon and taskbar peak functionality then sticking with Fences 4 makes the most sense. You can also wait until Fences 6 comes out and see if that is the version you can't live without.

New Fence versions should start coming out pretty fast. If you do happen to have the urge to purchase every version then economically only the subscription model is going to make sense. Permanent license owners really should be the type of people that skips certain version.

I believe I will stick with Fences 4 myself. Not a fan of the new subscription model.

v3 was released in 2016.

v4 came out in 2021 and has only been updated 4 times in total, 5 if you include the newest update that adds in an ad for v5.

you absolutely will not get your moneys worth if you go with the subscription.

v5 doesn't even add any new features on top of v4 as far as i can see. the "new" chameleon feature that is advertised is already possible with v4.

i bought fences back in 2010 for 10, bought v2 in 2014 for 8.5, upgraded to v3 in 2016 for 5, and then upgraded to v4 for 8 in 2023. 31.50 in total and now they want 30 for me to go from v4 to v5. Stardock has lost a longtime customer with this BS.
