Another Start11 v.2 bug

knocks out system clock on Taskbar and system tray won't open

I thought everything was working fine after my initial problems woth Start11 v.2. Tonight I noticed that the system time and date at the right-hand end of my taskbar was stopped at about noon today and the system tray will not work. Went into settings and tried to sync the time. Got a message that it was unable to sync the time. Checked my internet connection and everything was fine. Strangely, the date and time is correct in my programs that show date and time. The second bug, which is probably related to the first, is that the System Tray will not open. I have a few programs there. With v.1 I also used the larger taskbar and icons, but after installation of V.2 I noticed that the taskbar was again smaller (in height) and the icons smaller

That said, my taskbar is on the bottom, left centered. I again adjusted the height of the taskbar to accommodate larger icons.

Any ideas of what's going on?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I don't see the issue on my system. However, have you tried the latest release yet? https://forums.stardock.com/523734 Start11 V2.03.

Thanks

I too see this happening. I have yet to pin down when it happens. Its only happened 3-4 times usually requiring me to reboot. I will experiment with it to see if I can reproduce it consitantly

I will try but it is a very random thing. Fortunately it doesn't occur often.

Its not that the time is wrong it's that the clock and the tray eventually stop being painted. I also posted about this in the main v2.03 thread.

The best I can figure is that while in a fullscreen video (vlc in my case) the taskbar becomes unresponsive. I was playing a video and I tried to adjust the volume using the volume roller on my keyboard. Nothing happened until I returned to windowed mode. The taskbar was locked. I tried clicking on taskbar buttons and right clicking. After about 20 seconds all of the events started happening as if from a queue. The volume indicator popped up and went up and down, the context menu was opened and closed in a few places and some windows minimized and restored. I can reproduce it everytime.

EDIT:

It left explorer so messed up I had to reboot again. Even after turning off start11 entirely.

I used the reset settings option and it fixed the problem so now I just need to narrow down which setting causes it.

EDIT:

Disabling "Give the taskbar rounded corners" and restarting explorer fixes it. Seems we found the offending area. I'll leave it to Neil to hammer it down further.

EDIT 2:

Last edit for the night. I clicked on reset settings and then enabled enhance taskbar option and the problem returns. With no other settings. I also noted that the round settings like X and Y offset are not restored to def when clicking reset. Looks like we have a regression in the enhance taskbar section.

I reproduced this. It is really hating my volume control on full screen apps for whatever reason.

Thanks for your reply and that of Phoenix Rising and halcyon6969. To answer, no -- I haven't tried 2.03. In fact, I didn't know about it. Doesn't Start11 notify users of updates? Thought it did but rec'd none. Before I update and possibly another raft of time wasting problems, will the update keep my current settings to the Start Menu? I am using the Windows 10 option, with my own modifications. It took me a long time to set it up and I don't want to have to do it again.

Judith

P.S. After reading the comments about 2.03, I'll pass on it for the time being. Would rather go back to plain v.1. It worked fine.

We do not notify users of beta updates in the config UI.

I can also report that when turning on "Let Start11 enhance the taskbar," things got pretty whacky after enabling rounded taskbar. I can't narrow it down to a specific action, but my computer froze with the Start11 Config app open. After ending the task for Start11 Config, I was able to reboot. I reinstalled 2.02 over 2.03, rebooted, and reinstalled 2.03 over 2.02. Then I turned off "Let Start11 enhance the taskbar," and everything is working okay. I do have rounded corners turned on the taskbar without any issues.

What settings do you have enabled for the enhanced taskbar?  Are you using any of the font override options, or custom sizes?

Add opening widgets to the list of things that break the taskbar on 2.03

Rebooting seems to have fixed the problem for now so it isn't instant on reboot. I will keep an eye on when this happens again and report back

Also was this happening with beta 1.02 or did it only show up with beta 2 from Friday?

This is something new to Fridays release.

I got some pretty good testing in. I believe that what is happening is that the widget menu becomes less stable as a side affect from another issue. The only thing I have pinned down for sure is that the volume control in full screen does always cause issues. I believe the widget becoming less stable is an after affect that doesn't go away until the pc is rebooted.

edit - I am still seeing some sluggishness with how the widget menu works regaurless. It is hard to predict when this will happen. I will also note that I am on the 23H2 release.

I am confident I have figured out the widgets issue. Sometimes widgets opens "no maximized windows" and sometimes widgets opens in "when there is a maximized window" I believe it is getting confused and doesn't know which one to open up into
