How does the rating system work?

I was curious to what were the qualities on which an items rating was determined, I know this is probably a question that comes up way more frequently than you'd all like it to; and I'm sorry if I missed that thread by a day or so. I honestly did seek out the answer b4 writing this. The reason for me asking is one of my pieces has a rating of 0. Now I'm not writing this to complain or tell you how you bruised my delicate inner-child or anything like that; because I make the OD icons that I submit because I enjoy it and not for some points or whatever. What stirred my curiosity as to how items obtain their rating is that I would think if you were really that impartial to an item to rate it a zero why approve it at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it was approved because it was a requested item and now the person who asked for it was able to download it. Anyway that's all, I was just curious about the rating process. Thanks

Type 'Ratings' in the search option right above this and behold.......

Email a moderater and let them know they forgot to give your piece a rating when they approved it. Should not have a zero.

I looked through your uploads and there's nothing with a 0 rating. You have uploaded 6 Object Dock icons and I see three 6's, two 8's and a 7. That's 6 ratings.

It's been sorted.

If a submission bypasses moderation when it shouldn't it fails to receive a rating so languishes on '0' and therefore invisible to most people.

If the correct procedure is followed, a moderator will assign an initial rating determined by critical opinion, which is subsequently 'revised' through public ratings being added.

So...the '0' applied was a technical error, and you are quite right....if an admin considered it a '0' [or '1', for that matter] it'd be rejected, not accepted...

Hip...I'd already fixed it...

Thanks for clarifying the process and I do appreciate you guys changing the zero even though like I said I was more just kinda curious about the process than upset over a number attached to my upload. If you don't mind me asking; when you say "revised through public opinion" How exactly does one cast a vote, is it just by clicking on the ratings button. I ask this because I've clicked it b4 and was expecting a 1-10 selection or something. I just figured voting was handled by advanced members. Oh, one more thing I gotta say is thanks for such prompt replys to my question.

Exactly...You have to be Apprentice or higher...or a WC Subscriber/OD customer.

I also was kinda curious whether or not there were other specific qualities you look for that make or break a submittal other than overall esthetics

The prime reason for Moderation is to help ascertain whether a submission is not a 'rip' of another's work...or has objectionable content....[you'd be amazed - or maybe not].

With sections such as wallpapers we also tend to limit submissions because the aim is that Wincustomize is a skinning site which also hosts walls....not a wall site that also hosts skins.  There is a distinct difference between the two...

"Aesthetics"

As for the objectionable content thing it doesn't surprisr me that it's there but that people still submit it. I no how it is though when you do a good job on something and wan't to share it; my best work is an animated Object Dock icon/ lightsaber battle between Obi 1 and Darth Maul that I'm sure everyone would dig but would never make the cut because you guys and myself would probably get sued. I guess you can't rely on everybody reading the rules.
And thanks EventHorizon, that answers my question and I'll be able to spell it correctly from now on.

I look long and hard at this wallpaper. I want to SEE IT! I want to see how this wallpaper is one of the "best of the year." I don't see it.

Perhaps my sense of aesthetics is out of whack? But in my world it's a 3!

fortylegz....each to his own...but if everyone has an opinion that differs to yours then it's a fair guess that yours is the one that is askew, not theirs.
